Apple has announced a recall of some batteries sold with 12-inch iBooks and 12-inch and 15-inch PowerBook G4s. The batteries were manufactured by Sony, who also supplied Dell with faulty batteries currently under recall, and were sold with notebooks between October 2003 and August 2006. Are you affected?

powerbookfire80.jpgApple has announced a recall of some batteries sold with 12-inch iBooks and 12-inch and 15-inch PowerBook G4s.

The batteries were manufactured by Sony, who also supplied Dell with faulty batteries currently under recall, and were sold with notebooks between October 2003 and August 2006.

Like the Dell batteries, Apple says that the affected units "pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances", occasionally causing the notebook to catch fire.

Owners of notebooks manufactured within the specified range are advised to check if their batteries need to be exchanged. The following serial numbers identify the faulty batteries:

The information is printed on the inner side of the battery, so it will need to be removed to check. Apple's battery recall site offers images to help users locate their battery model and serial number.

Apart from the safety concerns, the recall offers affected users the opportunity to snag a brand new, fully-juiced battery. Thanks, Sony!

It's likely Qantas will limit usage of Mac notebooks on planes as it has with Dells.

Australian customers need to contact their local Apple Authorized Service Provider to obtain a replacement battery, which will be posted out free-of-charge.

Jack Cox:

So let me get this straight. When Dell recalls batteries it gets a story on APCMag.com with paragraph after paragraph of horror battery stories, yet when Apple recall what appears to be a much larger percentage of shipped batteries its all sweetness and light because you get a 'free battery' in return?

What do Dell users get? A box full of coal, signed photo of Michael Dell and a $5 rebate on the purchase of a new battery?

I'm with Jack.

"Apart from the safety concerns, the recall offers affected users the opportunity to snag a brand new, fully-juiced battery. Thanks, Sony!"

Where's the analysis about how these problems happen? How about looking at the nature of hardware supply in the OEM PC industry and how that may have contributed?

Or maybe even acknowledging that this actually means that Dell and Apple are using the same hardware, making Apple's marketing and image as a superior quality OEM a load of total bullshit?

The absence of research here is stunning - you didn't even call Qantas to ask if they had a position on it, yet felt the need to speculate. A two minute phone call could have given you an actual comment from the company. Much more interesting than idle speculation, even if it were just "No comment".

Apple is recalling almost half as many batteries, having sold 1/10th as many units, and somehow they (and even more bizarrely Sony) get treated as heroes. Is this Gaden guy real, or is he a made up writer used to make fun of Mac users?

i thought that apple's market-share is less than 5 per cent. how come they recalling that many batteries? dell's recall is approximately only twice that high.

Tim Gaden:

@mediatalk -- Apple's market-share of the overall computer market is around the 5% mark, but it's share of the laptop market is much larger. According to recent figures:

In general, sales of Apple's notebook computers have been on the up and up this year, with the company's share of the US notebook marketing doubling to 12 percent during the six-month period ending June.

Since this recall obviously only affects notebooks, Apple's numbers are larger than one might expect.

Well you'd be right... except that you're not. That was a totally different battery recall of LG Chem batteries. This is a Sony battery recall, directly linked to the source of the exploding Dell batteries.

An exploding battery is an exploding battery. I don't care where they come from.
