Apple TV and iPhone get YouTubed, Mac OS X gets 10.4.10 update

A big morning of Apple news with YouTube released for Apple TV and iPhone. And if that wasn't enough, Apple has given us a fat 50Mb OS X 10.4 upgrade, even though 10.5 is just around the corner.

YouTube, now on Apple TVYouTube, now on Apple TV
Apple has released the promised YouTube plug-in for AppleTV. According to Apple, users can download the free software update (just go to the settings menu and check for software updates) and then easily navigate through YouTube’s familiar video browsing categories or search for specific videos.

If you are a YouTube member you can also login to your account on Apple TV to view and save your favorite videos.

The Apple TV update also ushers in some other small changes. Users now have the ability to use iPhoto slide shows for the AppleTV screensaver (rather than all photos, or the cover art), and can select their country of residence - something that may be related to buying content directly via AppleTV in the future or getting a regional selection of YouTube videos.

For concerned mums and dads there is also a new Parental Control section that allows AppleTV to be 'locked' with a 4 digit PIN.

Apple TV on iPhone

In the same announcement Apple surprised everyone by announcing they are also bundling a YouTube app on the iPhone . Similar to the Apple TV plugin, the iPhone app will let users tune in to YouTube clips wherever they are, connected via built-in WiFi or GPRS/EDGE (though it remains to be seen whether YouTube video plays at any sort of acceptable quality over GPRS/EDGE).

Both the Apple TV and iPhone's YouTube support is based on the H.264 codec. YouTube will have nearly 10,000 H.264 videos available at launch, with more being added each week until the full catalog of clips is available by North American Spring (that's March next year if you find North American seasons utterly confusing like us).

Mac OS X 10.4.10 update

If you don't have AppleTV or an iPhone yet there is still something for you this morning. Apple has just pushed out the 10.4.10 update. The update addresses a number of issues that most people don't have like mounting/unmounting of USB devices, but it's good to see Apple still actively developing 10.4 even though 10.5 is just around the corner. The 50MB update is available via Software Update.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm?

I thought Apples were so perfect, that they did not need an upgrade.

Yes Mac's do get upgrades, but the best thing is we are generally getting enhancements and new features, not constant security patches and critical fixes.

I take it you use windows?!?
If mac os x on intel machines capable of running vista better than a pc clone can.
(I have proven this, my home pc runs vista and I get blue screens after most updates and forced restarts, none on my mac in vista)
If Apples don't appeal to you man then check your pulse as I cant imagine anything would excite u. run all 3 oses and appreciate there differences is like comparing bottles of wine in my eyes. Good wine is good wine whatever the flavour.

Dan Warne:

The Apple myth works by people like you making up what Apple users think.

No Apple user thinks their OS is "perfect" or "doesn't need updates". They just think it's a lot better in terms of product quality than Windows, and they're at a loss to understand why diehard Windows users who've probably never used a Mac for longer than 45 seconds in a showroom are so convinced that Windows is the one and only choice.

No OS is perfect. You can MacHack with Skype through a security hole (fixed anyway). You can WinHack Vista through security updates (99% fixed and patched) and Linux/UNIX is still strongest.

Strangely enough I use Windows. Why? Because of hardware choices, messing around, expansion and I don't have $700 for a Mac which will likely, like iPods break down or be damaged - and want $40 for earplugs if they break.

But I do have $400 for a PC which can be upgraded later if I so wish. With Mac - no go Joe.
