iPhone 3G unlock finally available, give your telco the finger

Danny Gorog02 January 2009, 9:25 PM

Unlocking your 3G iPhone in Australia just got a whole lot easier, with the release of the "yellowsn0w" unlock application, from our good friends at the iPhone Dev Team.

If you wanted to use an iPhone on your choice of mobile carrier, your only option was to get a first-gen (2G) iPhone -- which could be easily hacked to be carrier-agnostic -- or buy an iPhone 3G at full price from a carrier and pay the unlocking fee.

Now, six months after the release of the iPhone 3G, anybody game enough to jailbreak their iPhone can now also unlock it for use on any network.

Before you jump into running Yellowsn0w on your iPhone, there are other, more legit ways to unlock your phone if you so desire. All three major Australian telcos let you unlock your iPhone but for different amounts.

Telstra, as you'd expect charges the most at $150 to unlock your iPhone. Vodafone charge $75, while those contracted with Optus can unlock for free (though Optus pre-paid customers need to pay an additional $80 for an unlock).

In most cases an official unlock takes approximately ten business days after you've submitted your IMEI number to your telco (and paid your fee, if required) and requires you to restore your iPhone via iTunes once you've been notified by your carrier that the unlock has been successful. So, if you're in a rush, forget about it.

From my discussion with staff at the Apple Genius bar the official unlock process can only be initiated via the carrier, but the actual unlock is performed by Apple. Also, if your phone ever needs to be replaced, your 'unlock' information is carried to your new iPhone (which will have a new IMEI number) so your unlock sticks. I've been through this process, and it works.

But if an official unlock sounds either too expensive, too slow or too complicated head over to the iPhone Dev Team to learn more about their unlock solution.

In a nutshell, the unappealingly named "yellowsn0w" application is a small daemon (background program) that is launched on boot.  It injects its payload (the software modification that allows the phone to operate on any carrier) at boot time and also whenever there is a baseband (radio) reset.  You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party SIM now works.  It’s a small program and unobtrusive.  There is no GUI, and this is by design.

You'll need to running the latest iPhone software, version 2.2 and have QuickPwned your iPhone and have access to either the Installer app or Cydia.

The Dev team also notes that 'yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes' so you're safe to give it a try before you fork out any cash to the telcos.

The good reason to use the hack, of course, is to get a better monthly plan on your iPhone. You can check out our constantly updated list of the best Australian iPhone plans here.

Have you tried Yellowsn0w? Did it work?

About time life was made easier for those with iPhones who travel overseas and want to use a local SIM card rather than be slugged with outrageous roaming charges!

Anyway, Danny -- assuming one chose to unlock one's iPhone so that one could choose _any_ carrier, which do you reckon is currently best in Australia for a 'BYO iPhone voice+data plan'..?

David, it depends on the purpose - if you're talking maximum dollar value (call caps + data) 3 is the best on paper. But given their limited network you'd need to use your phone mainly in the city. Step into roaming and you'll be booted to the poor house very quickly.
I know this isn't going to be popular, but for all round coverage you can't beat Next G - If you BYO your iPhone 3G you can sign up to a Next-G cap plan, take a data plan (depending on the data you need), and you'll have great coverage wherever you go - so you can actually use your iPhone as intended.

That said, it will only be a few more months (2Q) until 3's new and much more appealing roaming arrangement with Telstra comes into effect. Though we still don't know the exact specifics of the arrangement (i.e, pricing), being able to roam on the NextG network at reduced cost (compared to roaming on their 2.5G network) will be a blessing for those outside of metro areas (including myself).

I have a feeling it has actually been switched on (I did an interview which included 3 CEO Nigel Dews recently) and from memory -- I could well be remembering wrongly -- they said it had been switched on. It's only being used in selected areas where they see high customer usage though... it's not Next-G-network-wide.

I agree, definitely about time. 3 is offering the best iPhone plan at present in my opinion.

I've been on a Virgin Mobile 'Free to V' Cap Plan for a few months now and it is very affordable for someone looking to save A LOT of money on their unlocked iPhone (it's already paid for my $150 unlocking fee.) Coverage is decent as Virgin runs on the Optus network, and I haven't had any problems. The data is the cheapest available in Australia AFAIK at only an extra $10 a month for 300MB, which is all that 99% of people would need (though 1 GB is only $15 a month.) The call rates and benefits are on par with other services like 3, with the added benefit of all calls and texts to Virgin Mobiles being 100% free.

I'm a bit....no.....EXTREMELY pissed off that I paid an $150 fee to unlock my iPhone when it can now be unlocked entirely for free!!! But then again I could never have waited until now without an unlocked iPhone 3G. I wonder if I can convince Telstra that I'd like to use them now and want my phone re-locked with the $150 refunded.....

okay guys!
The iphone 3g unlock was released new years eve at 10pm by the dev team in the states, and wasn,t working well on good old aussie iphone so alittle group of tweekers
in melbs have been playin around with the process last 3 days and voila they got it licked!
This was used to unlock a telstra iphone to 3 and it works
and then later quit a few other iphones
Here,s what you need iphone, usb cord, itunes and computer.
(helps also if ya have wifi to hook up cydia application installer)
1. one you need to update your iphone to firmware 2.2(has to have modem firmware 2.28.00)
2. okay download a program on your pc called Quickpwn to jail break the iphone(google search it)
3. Hook up your iphone with usb and jailbreak it(this will install cydia application installer)
4.Then you need to install a app called mobile terminal(this will allow you to enter some bash shell commands later)you can find this in cydia(cydia is a free app installer)
5.Then in cydia home page tap MANAGE down the bottom of screen then next screen tap sources and that screen tap EDIT then ADD.(this where being hooked upto wifi helps)
6. Then type in this url http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
7. this is the iphone unlock
8. follow instructions and install yellowsn0w iphone unlock
9.ok reboot iphone(turn of then on)
10. get ya new sim ready
11. ok go to mobile terminal you installed before and this where ya going to use your your bash shell commands and type in yellowsn0w -c and hit enter(do this 4 times) ya might have to do it 5 times just see it if it works.(oh the 0 in yellowsn0w is a zero)when you enter commands in mobile terminal there will be no errors just a new command line will appear when the command is succesful(watch your syntax here if you make a error start again)
12. okay go back to home and while doing this install you new sim card have a pin handy to extract it in a bit
13 tap settings turn on airplane mode count to ten then (pop out sim enough so it does,nt register) count to ten again then (put sim in again ) count to ten again (then slide airplane mode off and voila iphone searches for network SHAZZAM it finds it!!!
okay few notes on this , the unlock only been released still is a beta version it,s version 9.5 and if you turn your iphone off you might need to complete the yellowsn0w,mobile terminal and sim extracting process again .
As far as we know no damage will be dun to your iphone BUt be careful .
this has been a trial as the software unlock as itself did,nt work on aussie iphones to well ,
and this process was a homogination of techniques tried by peoples around the world .
but we have tried on a few iphones and it works on all of them !!
Good luck .
