Microsoft releases free beta of Security Essentials software

David Flynn24 June 2009, 8:04 PM

Now in public beta phase, Microsoft Security Essentials will not only replace the OneCare security suite but also deep-six Windows Defender.

Microsoft has finally wheeled its ‘Morro’ security software out of the workshop, with a new name and a public download. Microsoft Security Essentials has gone live online, albeit in beta format, ahead of the product’s expected final release in October alongside Windows 7.

The UI is a predictably clean and simple affair with big tabs, icons and clearly-marked buttons.

MSE is a pared-back version of OneCare with a primary focus on detecting and defending against malware such as viruses, spyware, worms, rootkits and trojans.

However, Microsoft has said that the freebie will also replace it Windows Defender spyware sniffer.

Users who fetch the fresh-baked beta download are advised that “Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection” and while Microsoft Security Essentials doesn’t currently “disable Windows Defender, it will in a later version of the beta”.

The menu bar glows green when all’s right with your PC, amber for cautionary alerts and red when a threat is detected.

MSE will remain as a download-only offering after its final release in order to avoid incurring the wrath of the EU and other anti-monopoly watchdogs, although it will also be made available to OEMs for pre-install on new PCs.

However, given that security vendors pay PC builders to pre-load their trialware, we don’t expect to see MSE widely displacing the likes of Norton or McAfee trial editions any time soon.

MSE is available for Windsows XP, Vista and 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, but Microsoft is pegging the downloads of this first beta to 75,000 copies.

Yeh, but it's not available in Australia. It's available to the Chinese, but not Australians.

Of course it's available to the Chinese... They're just going pirate it anyway if they don't release it there.

Well, just go to your fav torrent site and download it, it is very small (3.5Mb for the single OS install or 14Mb for all versions x64 and x86)

Runs fine in Windows 7, no where near as annoying as One Care with all its pop ups, very light weight, more so than AVG Free or Avast!. Over all I would recommend it at this point in time, but as its beta, I would hold off until its fully out, and maybe hold off again until it has been proven to work....

BTW I wasn't saying you should do it.... I was saying if you wanted it you could maybe do it that way.... what is a torrent? Isn't that something to do with water?

Torrents are the way you download Linux distros ;-)

Edit: Also, I should point out the irony of downloading security products from untrustable sources... Seems like a REALLY bad idea to me.

Aaaaaargh there young "Tin" As I'm still a total nutcase when it comes to this "torrent" stuff :)As we speak right here and now I'm down- loading SimplyMEPSIS 8.0.06 from The University of Indiana web-site.
As you probably know,it's 673Mb's and I started about 12:30pm and it'll finish about 5pm which is not that bad I reckon. I still have about 3.25Gb left on my download limit and about 11 days to use it in so why the h..l not. So pretty soon if all goes well :) I'll be talking to you all as a brand new Penguin and then it's goodbye Windows and it's blasted validation program.Have a good one everybody :)

Damn :( I got about 3/4 of the way through the download and my connection got lost so I had to restart :( Got the full file this time though and as soon as I burn it to a CD :) It's hi-ho Penguin and away.

Whats Linux?

It's a stable, flexible and capable open source OS that is wholly over-looked by the ignorant, the foolish and the ill informed!

What's a Secure end user OS? A: See Linux.
Thank you for asking!

You can get it on Softpedia. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Microsoft-Security-Essentials.shtml

I had live One Care trial and I waited till it expired to see what MS would do. They just nagged me to buy it even though they knew it was expiring soon in favour of MSE.

MSE is quiet and efficient even on beta. As always with windows, go with the flow. play around with Linux if you are bored

Hi "Hewgie' :) Is that by the way a picture of "Albert Einstein" or maybe the slide guitar player "Ry Cooder" both of which are two of my favourite people :)
