Microsoft extends Windows XP to mid-2009

Continued popularity of XP over Vista sees Microsoft give the never-say-die OS an unprecedented third stay of execution – this time to July 31 next year.

Just how longer can a seven year old operating system continue to reign over its shiny fresh-baked successor? The answer appears to be ‘as long as it wants to’, even when Microsoft is calling the shots.

Last week the company announced the third reprieve for Windows XP, which was originally due to hit ‘end of life’ status at the end of 2007. The cash-cow OS was subsequently allowed an extra six months to graze on the meadows due to the slow uptake of Vista, which was generally received as being too slow, too buggy and offering minimal value for the effort and expense of upgrading.

Then it received a second six-month stay of execution to January 31, 2009, through which box builders could pre-load XP onto their systems (often times with a Vista licence in the box, so that Microsoft could chalk this up as another Vista sale) or ship them with Vista installed but the ability to ‘downgrade’ to XP using a vendor-supplied recovery disc. But after January 31 the gig would be up. Microsoft would also simply stop producing and selling XP installation discs from that date.

Now XP continues to careen along without an ounce of respect for Microsoft’s forecasts. The latest news on the OS that wouldn’t die is that Microsoft will continue boxing and selling XP, and allowing XP to be installed as a ‘factory downgrade’ (as long as the PC still ships with a Vista licence) until July 31, 2009 – eighteen months after XP was first supposed to expire.

“My point isn't to encourage you to (move to Vista) immediately” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at an industry event in France last Thursday. “Of course, we'd love you to do it immediately. My real advice is to do it in the natural rhythm of your PC upgrade cycle,” admitted Ballmer. “Most of you will not upgrade the software on existing hardware. Some will. Most of you will actually choose to buy new machines when you move forward, and so we should work with you in that context.”

Yeah yeah Mr Ballmer, I'd love to believe you but I'm busy counting flying pigs.

What's the bet legal manufacturer XP downgrades will have to remain available until well into the Windows 7 release period at the very minimum.

Still collecting money from an 8 year old OS !. Sounds like MS is just providing what the luddite, retro and the 'fear-of-change' crowd wants !
It's the netpc's that have extended it's life ! A slim Win7 will surely see it's end.

No. Certain elements of Vista have extended XP's life. Same as how Vista has driven sales of Macs.
If MS correct the mistakes of Vista in "7", then many of the "luddite, retro and the 'fear-of-change' crowd" will probably quickly accept, move to, and recommend "7".

Umm, explain then if you will, exactly how many of those netpc's fit into the category of "allowing XP to be installed as a ‘factory downgrade’ (as long as the PC still ships with a Vista licence)"?

Well a slim, affordable, well designed and bug free Win7 would definitely bring about the retirement of WinXP. It's yet to be seen whether Microsoft can achieve all of those goals.

And if MS does get it right, will we see Tin, Raindog and McBanjo standing on street corners with sandwich boards spruiking the benefits of an MS OS ? ................. I would suggest not ! You'll never get a Labor man to vote Liberal !

If MS approach me offering more per hour than I currently get, then perhaps. But realistically, no, it's unlikely.
Of course if MS do fix the broken bits, then XP will drop down and 7 will be my recommended OS when speaking to clients.

that would be a very good thing.

I cannot speak on anyone elses behalf, because, well fanboy evangalism just isn't my thing. But it would certainly result in me no having to tell customers to avoid an OS because it was costing them more and delivering less.

Yes ignorance has got many governments past the post.

OK. I'm not buying or using either XP or Vista except when I have no choice and I'll wait to see if Windows 7 is anything more than Vista Lite - but even that would be an improvement. Seems like MS is promising so little with 7 that we can't help but be impressed if its not just Vista for touchscreens.

Meanwhile, I'll stay with Linux (even though 1: it's just not ready for the desktop, 2: it lets users use the primitive command line if they want to for god's sake, and 3: THERE'S NO SUPPORT!).

Sorry to disappoint, Plutonium !
But what I will say is, don't expect any sort of refund if you do decide to pay for the Vista licence and downgrade to XP !

All I can say is that you guys must be running under powered old Pc's out there if you can’t run Vista properly now. Why are so many people pinning their hopes on an unseen, untried OS? Open your eyes and use Vista now as it walks all over XP. The only reason why Microsoft is extending XP's life is because they have given up trying to push a product to users who have been so easily brainwashed into believing that Vista is no good. What get's me is that these same people will most likely upgrade to the new product purely because it does not have the name of "Vista". Let's be truthful here - it will be Vista just in a different package, but hey - I'll buy it :).

No, Vista just doesn't run properly. MS have admitted as much.
For the record, my home desktop is in Vista right now. I've been using it for about 6 months. And after 6 months, I have concluded that it's average at best. I really like some parts*, but others are show stoppers for me^ (which is why I've decided XP is probably what I'll be reinstalling next).

* UAC (despite crappy interface), Sidebar, Change to treating home dirs like Unix systems do
^ Network file sharing speed sucks even after SP1, Vista has a heart attack if someone even thinks about touching the MBR/Partition Table, search is completely pathetic now.
