The latest batch of Windows Updates are causing problems for some users resulting in blue-screens and panic.
Not only do we have the
Windows 7 security trouble this week, but also one of the fixes in the latest batch of Microsoft Windows Updates is causing some (mostly Windows XP, but some Windows 7) users the sizeable headache of a blue screen error and the inability to boot into Windows.
The killer is that to fix the problem, you need access to a Windows Installation CD. If you do have one, then the fix is explained
here (it requires use of the recovery console and some batch commands - how nostalgic!) and has been approved by a Microsoft tech. If you don't have an install disc, or no drive as most netbook owners, then you'll need to start badgering Microsoft for help.
According to
Computerworld, the patch in question is the one that fixes the 17-year old vulnerability discovered by Google staff a few weeks ago. Perhaps, it was better left alone? While the angry shouts of those stuck without a computer are getting louder it is interesting to see this problem has garnered less comments than the Windows 7 security feature mentioned earlier.
Microsoft says it suspects the problem is being caused by malware installed on some PCs that is faulting in the face of the newly-secured kernel.
