Windows 7 NOT a Mac rip-off, says Microsoft

Geoff Spick15 November 2009, 1:55 PM

A lot of tech sites were reporting an admission from Microsoft that it was "inspired by" Mac OS X. That's not the case according to an actual Windows 7 designer.

Browsing the web in the last few days, you may have been forgiven for looking out the window to check for aerial porcine creatures. Headlines along the lines of "Microsoft admits Windows 7 inspired by Mac" screamed out of quite a few sites.

In fact, the comments came from a Microsoft exec who had nothing to do with Windows design and it was up to an actual designer, Brandon LeBlanc to clarify those comments today, on the Windows 7 blog. He says, "An inaccurate quote has been floating around the Internet today about the design origins of Windows 7 and whether its look and feel was “borrowed” from Mac OS X.  Unfortunately this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7. I hate to say this about one of our own, but his comments were inaccurate and uninformed."

Windows 7, all Microsoft's own work, no leaning over Apple's shoulder in class

He goes on to cite some articles where you can read more about the actual process. Now, regardless of who did what with that pixel, this icon, the other background, menu system and so on, there are only so many ways to show and manipulate stuff on a screen using the current mouse-based system. Basically, designers have nicked stuff from each other for over 30 years in the quest for the best desktop and they all do roughly the same thing in slightly different ways. Hopefully this argument will go away until the next generation of 3D holofaces that we'll enjoy in a decade or so.

A Microsoft exec, what are the chances that he's now an unemployed exec after saying something that stupid regardless of whether its true or not.

What are the chances he is now emplyed by Apple? ............ And was poached a few months ago ;)

Win vs Mac
Coles vs Woolies
Ford vs Holden
Intel vs AMD
nVidia vs AMD/ATI

When an idustry is dominated by 2 players these sorts of allegations are always going to rear its head.

when i hear the cries of the macbois and them saying the micro$oft steals their design- i have always failed to see what they have in common with each other. both look distinctly different

Never been that interested in whatever Windows has for their desktops when with a single "R/click ->Properties -> Desktop" you can change it to whatever you want.Got a nice piccy of a 1963 Norton with sidecar on there right now :)

Windows 7 is no MAC rip off, the asking price of retail boxed versions rates more simply as a generic rip-off.

Of course it wasn't stolen from MacOSX. Macs have their "dock" in the middle. Windows has it's "taskbar" covering the whole bottom with the icons left aligned. ;-)

Seriously though, the new taskbar does look a bit MacOSX like. But who cares... Apple "steal" and buy ideas from other companies just as much as MS do. As do most open source OSes. It's good for everyone that this happens.

Does this mean "Tin" that they don't need a tugboat to take them out to the open sea whenever the urge to leave hits them.

and Amiga had them dock things in about 1991. And you could put them anywhere on the screen you wanted. And have as many rows and columns as your screen could fit. As photorealistic icons or just plain text. Who's copying who?
