27-inch iMac shipping delay grows to three weeks

Apple is mum on the reason for the much longer shipping delay on top-end iMac.

The sexy 27-inch iMac has been around for a while now and we have seen just about all there is to see of it. The machine was torn down back in October 2009 for us to peruse. Reports of screen flickering and other issues have also surfaced on the machine. Now reports are coming in that the delay on the 27-inch model has increased from a week to three weeks.

The delays are only on the 27-inch iMac, the 21.5-inch version still ships in 24 hours. Why the shipment delay for the 27-inch version of the iMac? There is no official word from Apple on the reason. It would be easy enough to guess that the cracked screen woes are adding to the delay in shipment.

Perhaps Apple is out of screens that meet its needs for the machine. Yet another possibility could be that the machines are delayed to allow time for stocks of units with the current processors to deplete so the new Intel processors unveiled at CES can be added in. That is mere speculation, though an Intel email did surface showing a Core i5 MacBook was coming recently.

That or they're trying to find a way to ship the machine without breaking it...
