Beware of Dodo's "free" broadband

Cut-price ISP Dodo had some exciting news yesterday: free ADSL2+ broadband! Being jaded sceptics though, we had to ask: what's the catch?

The press announcement simply mentioned that customers would need to switch their home phone over to Dodo and the only cost would be a $32.90 line rental fee.

Sounds pretty good, we thought. Everyone has to pay a line rental fee anyway and most of us are being reamed to the tune of about $30 a month.

"The Australian public has been charged excessive fees for high speed internet access for too long and Dodo is putting an end to this," said Dodo's managing director in a statement.

"The US and UK have had free broadband services available for the last couple of years."

But then we looked at the terms and conditions of the offer. Like many "free" deals, there is a nasty sting in the tail (several actually.)

The "free" broadband offer only includes 150MB of usage. That's long enough for -- get this -- 50 seconds of downloads at full ADSL2+ speed.

After the initial 150MB, downloads are charged at $0.18 per megabyte. The next 150MB will cost you $27.00.

Even worse, the 150MB you do get "free" is "split 50% between 9am and 1am and 50% between 1am and 9am". So you only get 75MB of usage during waking hours before the chargeable megabytes kick in.

In its defence, Dodo has capped the total price of its "free" broadband at $29.95 a month, so at least, unlike Telstra BigPond's $29.95 plan, customers are not exposed to bills that potentially run into thousands of dollars in excess usage charges.

However, Dodo also pins the connection speed right down to the near-dialup speed of 64Kbit/s after you use your initial 150MB, so for the most part, you'll be using glorified dialup and paying through the nose to do it.

I'm evidently not the only person who's unhappy with the way Dodo is presenting its broadband deals to the market.

In the last Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman report (27 March 2007), Dodo is reported as having attracted 4,378 complaints from consumers -- nearly four times as many as OptusNet at 1,030 and nearly twice as many as Telstra BigPond at 2,330. And that was only in the three month period leading up to 31st December 2006.

News of Dodo's customer service woes have started appearing in the mainstream media. Melbourne newspaper The Age wrote recently: "this internet service provider has a clear record of woeful customer service".

One Dodo customer was reportedly forced to cancel his credit card to stop Dodo billing him for a cancelled service, because he was literally unable to contact Dodo's customer service after dozens of engaged signals and unanswered emails.

In fact, at the time, The Age couldn't even contact the company, which has since engaged a PR Agency to paint the company in a more positive light.

Broadband community Whirlpool.net.au's annual survey of satisfaction with broadband providers also showed massive anger towards Dodo in the 2006 survey.

The company scored worst on customer service, with 53% of people saying they had to wait 20 minutes or longer to get a person on the phone (comparable only to another ISP, Wild, which has since gone into administration.)

Furthermore, 61.5% of people surveyed said Dodo's customer service was "below average" or "awful". 45% of people said they'd previously left Dodo because of poor customer service, while 32% said it was because of poor network reliability.

The Whirlpool Dodo forum is overflowing with discussion threads like "I got out of Dodo - thanks for the help" and "can I block Dodo from my bank?"

When Dodo first appeared on the scene back when 56K was fast, we used them for a whole 2 months before they kicked us off.

Before we signed up with them, I had emailed them to ask what session limits applied, and whether they had anything against the idea that we might use 1GB or so per month. They said it was fine, and we signed up.
Then they changed the T&C and in a strange move, applied them retrospectively.We were booted off for breaching a policy that didn't exist at the time of the breach.

Never thought much of them since that. At least they are pulling the same silly stunts still.

Last time I looked they also only provided a D-Llink DSL200 modem which is not an always on connection if you turn off your PC. To start the connection you need top create a connection in the "New Connection Wizard" in windows and connect every time you start your PC. Cheap, Nasty and Very Inconvenient. And I have dealt with Dodo CS for a number of customers and it is woefull. Tell the world, dont use DODO.

Does this mean that Dodo customers can say "Those who are fooled by 'free' Internet access gimmicks, sah D'oh"?

Lesson here is always read the fine print of every contract (dare we be forced to sign one). Consumers beware, and complain, complain, complain. This sort of marketing campaign is highly misleading, and must be wiped out in Australia. Give the consumer a fair go and a real service - give us cheap ADSL 2 with no traps to make us pay through the nose. We are not sheep ready to be fleeced. Comsumers beware of this one! Ignore this company and it should go away just like every other company which gives such poor service and overcharges, and applies penalty fees. Please shop around, pay a fair amount for a reasonable service and you shouldnt need to purchase broadband with a lock in contract and minimal penalty, maybe a slowdown after 10-15 gig per month (lets be realistic we all like downloads).

I signed up to DoDo's First broadband deal a few years ago,(not on it anymore, No way! Exetel ADSL FTW =D) 256k broadband and a free Electric Scooter! lol does anyone remember this? anyway the scooter took 6 months to be delivered, it lasted 1week and a half then broke down. Could not contact dodo for a new one as 'you should contact the Scooter maker and deal with them'. Customer Service was horrible, 20minutes minimum if not longer and then when u get through, 8/10 times its a barley-speaking-english foreign speaker.

Dodo = Absolute Rubbish.

I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about, What does everyone want? It's a FREE service up to 150mb's, once you reach the limit you simply stop using it.

What do you expect 20gb's shaped to 128k and no fee's what so ever? Geezzzz people demand too much for something that is offered as a FREE service.

Well this new plan, would only be applicable for people that ONLY and just only check their emails, any surfing or whatsoever on the net, will burst their 75mb limit instantly, not to mention having to pay after that, but like i said, if your only going to check your emails its nice,

What is objectionable about it is the marketing advantage that Dodo gets from calling its service "free" but really only offering 50 seconds of usage a month. In reality, the vast majority of people who sign up to this plan will be paying $29 a month, but Dodo will sign up a lot more people, because it is marketed as being "free".

The problem is that this a very costly dial-up service. Anybody will easily pass that 75 M limit and then effectively they will be paying so much for what is essentially a dial-up service.

You cannot justify such a service even if it comes with the free tag because its actually very expensive. A lot of people will fall for this I am sure and its not good at all.

I have a Dodo service for my parents home and use Koala Telecom for home and I can tell you right now that Dodo is 200% better then Koala Telecom. In Whirlpool.net.au's forums for this ISP its nearly 100% hate and i mean prue personalised hate, even there worst employees actually get named which is somthing you dont see in Dodo forum. Atleast with dodo I do not have to call them very often at all I have a massive TIO complaint against Koala on 3 fronts. Its been running for 4 weeks and even looks like it could head to court. You would think I am the exception to the rule...from what i have found out most people that leave Koala usally need the help of the TIO...!

if you plan to change, take my advice - don't change to primus. i was on a contract with them and it ended up with tio as well.

the modem, which i bought from them, was faulty and they wouldn't admit it - i had to re-set every few times i logged on. tedious!

then they screwed up my billing which ended up with them disconnecting me. only tio got me out of the mess and the contract.

i went straight and bought a wireless modem and signed up with iburst (without a contract). it's the best thing i've done!

on the one occasion they had technical issues in all the time i've been with them, they admitted it and told me they'd ring me back when the problems was resolved. not much longer - they rang me as promised. the honesty was re-freshing.

apart from that, i can walk away from the service tomorrow without being held for ransome by tiresome contracts.

my opinion - don't do primus :-/
