Ever wondered how other people seem to be able to download content from the US iTunes store? Read on for their dirty little secret.

While there's no denying that the iTunes store provides the most comprehensive source of legal digital content in Australia there is still a lot missing (like movies) and the cost of consuming digital media here is considerably more than it is in the US. With the release of Apple TV 2.0, both of these facts have been further reinforced.

When Apple announced the upgrade to Apple TV 2 they also mentioned in passing (in the way only Apple can) that an international rollout of the movie store (including rentals) was scheduled for later in the year. Apple did not however, get specific on which countries would be getting movies and when. If the iPhone regional releases are anything to go by, though, the best case scenario for Australians is movie downloads within twelve months. If you go by the time it took Apple to make iPhoto books available here it might be a lot longer.

While it's impossible to sign up for a US iTunes account with an Australian credit card, or billing address, it is possible to sign up for a US iTunes account if you can find a way to get a US iTunes gift card. And as it happens, finding a US iTunes gift card doesn't take much work at all. Buy it on eBay (make sure to pay by credit card to give yourself a level of fraud protection) and the seller should be able to email you the card's code straight away.

Once you find and purchase a gift card you'll receive a code that you need to enter in to the 'Redeem' area of the iTunes music store. Because gift cards can only be redeemed in the store they were purchased (make sure to buy a gift cards from the US iTunes store) you'll need to create a new iTunes account in the US store.

You may still be prompted to enter a credit card number for future purchases. Be sure to click the "no credit card" option (or similar). You will need to enter an address for the account (you'll have to use your imagination for that one, but we hear a lot of Australian-based US account holders live at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino). Nothing will physically be delivered there, so I wouldn't be too concerned if you get it wrong.

Click on the 'Redeem' link and enter your iTunes gift card codeClick on the 'Redeem' link and enter your iTunes gift card code
Once you've set your account up all you need to do is keep it topped up by adding more gift cards.

Not only will a US iTunes account give you access to loads more content, including movie rentals but pricing is much more competitive as well. For example, a track in the US costs USD .99c, while the exact same track costs AUD $1.69 or USD $1.54 - that's a 50c saving, on the exact same set of ones and zeros.

Of course, you'll need to read Apple's licence conditions for using iTunes gift cards and make your own decisions about your interpretation of that!

Cool! But it's still a bit inconvenient right?

Am I wrong in saying:

1. Once you run out of credit you have to buy more US gift cards.

2. Any itunes tracks with DRM you already have will become unplayable unless you log in with the old account.

The attraction of iTunes for me is it's simplicity. I'd rather wait than have to think about different accounts and using ebay to pay for new albums :)

Danny Gorog:

Not really.

Maintaining multiple iTunes accounts is really easy - and you don't need to authenticate all the time - only occasionally.

Plus, if you only stick to using it for movie rentals there's no issue - as rentals expire after you watch them.

I thought id give it a try but it has no option for no credit card when signing up, only Paypal and this requires you have USA funds from a US credit or bank account.

I dont think you actually read this article.

Buy a PREPAID card (gift card) and then use that to sign up.

If you buy the prepaid card not from itunes, but say, from ebay, you can usually pay via credit card on their terms (ie, visa, mastercard etc) or even just paypal.

So at no point before you have bought that have you stepped foot into the itunes site yet...

After thats sorted, you have the code etc,

THEN go to itunes.

In fact im repeating the article all over again!

But at least i didnt post publicly that despite millions of dollars spent in education per quater, you somehow missed it and can't read.

TV Chick (New user):

Apple got rid of the option NOT to enter a credit card (and only use a prepaid card) somewhere in iTunes 7 (late 07 or early 08) because of US movie studio concerns with their content being used outside of the US. It can still be done - Google it and start reading...

Skythra,

I tried it as well, but I also had no success.

I thought I followed the steps properly as well, but it also didn't work for me, so if you can help out that would be great.

I purchased an iTunes $15 gift voucher from EBAY as suggested and received the code about 30 minutes later.

Through the iTunes I selected the US istore site and then selected redeem.

I entered the code into the field where it says redeem, but then it askes you to create an account, which I did.

In the first page you enter your basic details, but then on the second page you are asked for your credit card details. Unfortunately, there is no way around not selecting a credit card option contary to what it says above.

I REALLY want to set up itunes US account, given that 1) I now have $15 US to spend on it and 2) the $AUD is pretty damn high.

So please help. I am also confused, and I did read the instructions properly.

McBanjo:

Why aren't these recent Apple TV entries categorised under the Mac topic on the top bar of the site. I mean they aren't Mac, but they are Apple and they make Macs, so it's relevant to Macs. Just as Microsoft is relevant to PCs.

Actually this whole site needs a revamp me thinks.

Ahem... Microsoft is relevant to Windows, not PCs.

Why not protect your investment and remove the DRM when you download them. Uhm Virtual Audio Cable?
