Hi all,
I've been testing out various firewalls (on my XP SP3 system), and after each install I've been checking Windows Task Manager to see how much memory each firewall uses to run.
After uninstalling Outpost Pro, and installing Comodo, I noticed a process called 'System' (NOT system.exe, just 'System') in my Task Manager had a CPU usage of 00, but a Mem Usage of 60,640 K. It's at the top of my Mem Usage list, which is strange because it's right near the bottom on my other 2 XP computers, running at about 284 K.
I've un-installed Comodo, run registry cleaners, virus and spyware scanners, restarted the PC and nothing seems to help. I can't end the process or even change the priority as I get an "Access Denied" message.
Does anyone have any suggestions on why this 'System' process has suddenly started hogging my Mem Usage, and/or how to fix it?? I've googled the error and can only seem to get answers to high CPU usage, and a fix for this problem for machines running Windows Server 2003. A temporary solution that was posted on another forum was to run Process Lasso, then select the 'System' process then 'Trim Virtual Memory'. This drops the memory usage from 60,400 K to 84 K, but it goes back up to 60,400 upon reboot of the PC. So obviously something still isn't right.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have reached the end of my computer knowledge and am getting very frustrated :-(
Cheers
SuperEd.

Sorry I don't have a solution, but I am experiencing the same thing. My System usage started at 60,640, and a couple days later has crept up to 60,724. I will be keeping an eye on this, but any help for us would be appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue so for now i am using the Band-Aid solution suggested earlier in the original post. Does anyone have a more permanent solution or even a reason why this is happening?

I too have the same issue. Has anyone figured this out? I usually run programs at less than 20 or 30,000 K. I was not messing with firewalls or anything though, I even did a complete fresh install. It had gone away momentarily then reappeared

I've also done a fresh install and it came back up again. When I thought it might be a hardware issue I checked another PC in my house (on the same network) and it seems that this process has flared up on it as well. I have reset my router, run all spyware and virus checks, defragged and...nothing. Process Lasso is my best friend at the moment.

I am having the exact same problem. I installed the Comodo Firewall, now I have a System process stealing a lot from me, loading a picture folder makes my WMP skip. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried. I uninstalled my AVG, and it seemed to be working, because the memory usage of the system process was normal. I downloaded the latest avg setup and reinstalled it, but the mem usage is high again. So I am sure the AVG causes it, but I still don't know the solution...

@nokia_mobile_tg, you could be right mate. I ended up reinstalling xp WITHOUT AVG, using Kaspersky instead, and I don't have the problem anymore. My other 2 pcs that weren't experiencing this 'system' problem aren't running AVG either...
My brother's pc is having the same system process problem so when I get a chance I'll uninstall his AVG and see what happens. If everyone in this thread is using AVG then I think we have found the culprit...
Thanks again for the tip, hope it works :-)

Hi all,
We're seeing one usage of a database use significant more memory than we're used to and I'm hoping for some hints at what Postgres allocates memory for. BTW, we're running PG 7.1 on Linux.
First of all we see some of the PG processes use as much as 80 MB (according to top and ps). This seems to be allocated during a query (SELECT). Unfortunately, we haven't been able to discover exactly what query is doing this. Anyway, the first problem is this high memory allocation. Considering the database is only about 80 MB total (according to disk usage of the entire data directory), allocating 80 MB seems excessive. The second significant problem is that this memory allocation does not go down once the SELECT is completed. According to ps the process in IDLE yet the memory usage remains the same. If it was only one process then that would be fine but we see this happening with as many as 3 processes simultaneously and the box only has 256 MB RAM (although we plan to up that to 512 soon).
So, if anyone has any general idea as to when PG allocates memory (for example, I assume and hope, the PG process wouldn't allocate enough memory to have the entire result set in memory) I'd appreciate the info. Any other clues are also welcome. We have other, near identical, instances of this database which do not show this behavior. The particular queries being done will differ between them and one particular table is about 10 times larger (150,000 rows instead of 15,000) in this db as compared to the others but I don't see either of those factors causing this large a difference. Well, I don't know, how much memory do semi-complex queries take?
