Anyone had a play with the betas of Ubuntu 8.04 yet? I'm curious to know what it's like, especially since this is an LTS release. I notice that it has just been released as an official beta.

There's a brief first look right here with some decent pictures.

I can't actually comment - I downloaded it from Internode's mirror, but it wouldn't boot on the computer I was going to trial it on. It just got stuck halfway through "Loading Linux kernel"

I have been using Ubuntu 8.04 for quite a while now and all seems good, It is still in beta but works well. I cant wait till the end of next month, I will be using this distro as a full time os. It Rocks!!!!

I am usually full of praise for new ubuntu releases but Hardy has left me a little under-enthused. It is certainly fast and (once it got beyond the RC) installs fine for me on several machines. I just feel that several of the changes were unnecessary (especially in networking/folder sharing) and that including new and beta apps in a Long Term Support release is asking for trouble. For example, Firefox Beta 3.5 is quite stable but not yet well supported by add-ons. I have reverted to FF2 for the time being. The networking thing is my biggest headache - Hardy doesn't seem to share nicely and is far less friendly in terms of gui network configuration tools - even though that has been one of the biggest requests from users for the past two years. There have been a lot more posts about networking on the Ubuntu Forums since Hardy was released. Not good.

There is also an understandable lag in some third party software that can cause problems. I find that the latest version of VirtualBox, for example, requires a lot of effort and tweaking to run Hardy properly. No doubt this will be fixed soon.

Another issue for me has been slow updates for the Australian mirrors - Optus, I think. This has caused a few weird regressions and failed updates. I strongly suggest that Australian users switch to the main repos as soon as they install Hardy.

I am waiting for a couple more weeks before I upgrade any production machines.

I've just updated all the Ubuntu dualboot tutorials on the How-To section of this site using Ubuntu 8.04. In spite of the amount I muck around with Ubuntu, I don't use it as a day-to-day OS. However, it seems initially as stable as any other Linux distro I've encountered, and Ubuntu is generally quite fun to use.

It dualboots like a dream, I have to say. But, like any Linux distro, try to make simple changes like drivers and watch all your spare time disappear down the plughole of eternity....

Gotta agree with Aubrey...

Network sharing is a currently a step backwards from 7.10, and the kernel has issues with booting sony laptops (though launchpad fixed me right up). I can't even remote desktop to another machine running 8.04...

FF3.0 beta hasn't caused me any issues. I'm looking forward to the June/July update, and especially 8.10, which is supposed to focus on wireless and interface changes.

Oh, and I found the iinet server in Australia to be the most up-to-date and fast, but that might be a location thing.

Can't seem to see that particular phrase anywhere on the cover???

I DO see UBUNTU 8.04: VISTA-KILLER

But then, so is Windows XP

The word troll springs to mind

Norm,
"Windows" refers to all versions, just like "Linux" refers to all versions ................. and distros !

Every time a new distro version comes out . "It's a Windows Killer" !
APC does this to raise the hopes of Linux geeks and sell you a magazine !
