Acer's new Aspire 5378DG is the company's first 3D notebook.

Acer is the second largest shipper of computers in the entire world according to the latest statistics. The computer maker has even been able to push Dell into the number three spot. One reason is that Acer makes machines for literally every sort of user from the low-end Acer AspireRevo to machines optimized for media like the new Aspire 5738DG-6165 that the company has officially debuted today.

The new notebook looks plebian on the outside, but it is the first 3D notebook from Acer. The machine has a special 15.6-inch HD resolution screen with LED backlighting and integrated TriDef 3D technology inside. The screen turns plain 2D content into 3D content and requires the use of passive glasses.

Graphics for the notebook are via ATI Radeon HD 4570 GPU with 512MB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM. It has 4GB of system memory and runs Windows 7 64-bit. Other features include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 320GB of storage space, a 6-cell battery, and a gesture supporting touch pad. The notebook also has an integrated optical drive and Dolby sound. The machine will hit U.S. retailers this week and other countries after that date. The price will be $US779.99 or about $837 here in Australia (though expect the Aussie price to have 10-20% added on to fatten the pig that is the Australian retail distribution network!)

I've been a fan of Acer for quite some time and I'm glad to see what looks like another great product hit our shores.
I do, however, think that wearing "passive glasses" will be a novelty I will tire of quickly, as will viewing 3D content on a laptop altogether - each to their own though, it all depends on what a consumer is after in a product I suppose.

Don't mind me as I step aside and wait for the next gimmick to trick you into buying from a 2nd rate beige box builder.

This sure won't be enough to entice me to buy another machine, Phred.

I don't agree with you that Acer produce "2nd rate" PCs, but obiuvosly that doesn't make me right. I've had an Acer for a while now and am very pleased with its performance.

However, I haven't physically compared their products to other manufacturer's in order to draw such a well researched and backed up conclusion as you have, but I still think this is a positive step forward for Acer.

Hey nice blog…I really liked the way you articulated it. Recently, I heard Acer is going to launch Acer 5738 PzG - a Multi-touch laptop in India. They have redefined the touch experience and all the controls are at the helm of your fingertips. With a 15.6" HD display with integrated multi-touch screen supporting finger touch and Cinematic 16:9 wide screen with 3rd Generation Dolby® audio it’s surely going to revolutionize the whole experience and all with affordable price of 45K INR. With it’s passion for simplifying user experience Acer has gained new heights in innovation.

Sounds great! that really does sound like a machine to look forward to - It seems that recently Acer have taken a firm footing in the sales of their PCs thanks to the range of notebooks they have on offer.

3rd Generation Dolby audio combined with a HD ready display can make this a great multimedia notebook, and it will also be interesting to experience the power and flexibility of the new touch controls - thanks for the 'heads up' on this product Prakash.
