AMD 6-core "Thuban" CPU details leak

AMD 6-core CPUs likely to offer less performance than Intel parts at a much lower price.

Those of us who really like computers and computer hardware love it when details of new products leak. AMD has had some of the details of its upcoming 6-core "Thuban" processors leak courtesy of a BIOS update issued by Gigabyte. We all knew that AMD would be working hard to get its 6-core parts onto the market after Intel launched its 6-core Gulftown parts this month.

We don't have the full details of the new AMD Thuban parts, but we do have a bit of info thanks to Gigabyte. The CPUs will be offered in X6 1035T, X6 1055T, and X6 1075T flavors. The CPUs will operate at 2.6GHz, 2.8GHz, and 3.0GHz respectively.

I fully expect the Intel parts to perform better than the AMD offerings, as has come to be the way of things recently. I also fully expect that the new AMD parts will be much cheaper than the Intel offerings. A nice Black Edition 6-core CPU at a bargain price sounds pretty good compared to the massively expensive Core i7-980X.

yummy...
i cant wait to sink my fangs back into AMD again.
Performance may be down, but i prefer to overclock AMD chips over intel

This sentence could do with clarification:

"AMD 6-core CPUs likely to offer less performance than Intel parts at a much lower price."

It could easily be read as "Intel parts will be cheaper" or just as easily as "AMD's parts will be cheaper." Perhaps just add an 'and' or 'but' between parts and at.

How is less performance at a lower price a good thing or news? I can just buy a cheaper, weaker Intel chip too!

Really? If you were to measure the performance / dollar, AMD would show more economic results, if you want performance then you'll pay a bit more for intel.
It’s also about competition (or the illusion thereof), having another chip in the mix means Intel can’t charge quite a much as they’d like to.
