Optus will offer month-by-month 3G plans for the Apple iPad starting at $20 for 2GB, along with prepaid plans.

The competition between carriers for a piece of Apple's iPad action has begun, with Optus putting flat month-by-month 3G plans as well as prepaid plans on its iPad menu.

Optus has confirmed to APC that it will offer a 'made for iPad' microSIM bundle with three month-by-month plans: $20 for 2GB, $30 for 3GB and $60 for 8GB.

These are almost identical to the 'BYO deals' which the carrier already offers to customers who supply their own USB modem or 3G laptop.

"Optus will also have prepaid as well as month-to-month data plans suitable for use with the iPad 3G" Optus spokeswoman Liz Greene told APC, with the promise that "we will provide further details of our iPad plans soon."

Earlier today Telstra revealed its prepaid iPad Next G plans which cost $20 for 1GB, $30 for 3GB and $60 for 6GB on top of the initial $30 'Pre-Paid SIM for Apple iPad' start kit which comes with 1GB (and a bonus 2GB if activated before June 30th). Telstra has not yet revealed if it will also offer month-by-month plans.

Because you're an Apple fanboi.

(Well, not you personally, but you get my meaning)

Dear moderator: I read the APC articles regularly to stay in touch with relevant Australian tech news. However, it appears that whenever you post an article about an Apple product, your comments section quickly gets polluted with churlish comments (such as "why would you bother?") or overused cliches (such as "apple fanboi").

I do appreciate that your magazine is open to all age groups and that everyone is entitled to express an opinion, but is there a way to set some ground rules and filter out comments that serve no purpose other than to provoke or insult?

Personally I did have some comments to make about your scoop (which I thought had merit) but I am reluctant to contribute if the maturity of your readership is as above.

Please help encourage some more processed and thoughtful discussion by filtering out the pointlessly provocative comments.

I took that as why would you bother with Optus...After suffering through their pathetic network performance with the iPhone, then it doesn't matter how cheap or how much data they give you, as it simply won't work reliably on 3G...

Probably no help that it doesn't have 900MHz 3G support for areas where 3G could potentially work well.

Just one of it's many flaws, I guess.

I guess it's a flaw if you go with Optus...made that mistake once...if the hardware doesn't fully support the network than I'm not sure they (Optus) should be selling it. I can't imagine it will perform very well and downloading content over a dial-up speed GSM network will not be much fun.
