Telstra reveals its prepaid Next G plans for Apple's 3G iPad, spanning from $20 for 1GB to $100 for 12GB, all with 30 day expiry.

Telstra is the first Aussie carrier to reveal details of its 3G – or should we say, Next G – plans for the Apple's iPad, which launches here on May 28th.

The contract-free 'Pre-Paid SIM for Apple iPad Kit' costs $30 and includes an initial 1GB of data. Customers who activate the kit by June 30th will score an additional 2GB of data, giving you a whopping 3GB to chew through.

Five recharge options are available, all with 30 days expiry for unused data.

The entry-level $20 pack comes with 1GB; $30 gets you a 3GB top-up; the mid-range $60 recharge comes with 6GB; $80 lands you 9GB, while the $100 top-up comes with 12GB (although we're open to suggestions as how any iPad user could gobble up 12GB, or even 6GB, in just 30 days).

The pre-paid iPad microSIM starter pack will be sold at Telstra Stores and "selected partners". Recharges are available via Bpay or through purchasing vouchers at outlets including Telstra stores and dealers, Australia Post, Target, Big W, Dick Smith, Woolworths, Safeway, Coles Fone Zone, K Mart, Retravision and Newslink newsagencies.

Apple's 3G-capable iPads will sell for $799 with 16GB of storage; the 32GB model comes in at $929, with the flagship 64GB 3G iPad at $1,049. Apple will begin taking pre-orders for the May 28th release at Apple.com.au from tomorrow Monday May 10th

Not good enough! I want $10/1GB/30 days or better; and not limited to iPad.

I'm pretty happy with those prices. Firstly, I live in Darwin so need Telstra for reliable reception. I will mostly be using the unlimited home wi-fi plan with my ipad and want 3G for GPS in the car, when on holidays and when out and about and can't find a wi-fi signal. No contracts, pay as you go is perfect. The $60/80/100 top-ups should last longer than 1 month but overall, great job Telstra!

Far better value than some of the previous prepaid "deals". I wonder if they're going to make these only work on the iPad somehow...

Via the MicroSIM... unless they're dumb enough to include an adaptor to make it a real SIM (which I wouldn't put beyond Telstra)

I think I'd probably go for the existing 4GB / 6 month expiry pre-paid wireless broadband plan over one of these. My experience with the iPhone is that you use MUCH less data than you anticipate (though of course if you want to do things like stream video from home to your iPad over 3G, that'd be a different story -- but I think that's an edge-case scenario). Now, can I get a micro-SIM with the 4GB / 6 month expiry plan... hmm...

You have to be kidding. I was all excited about buying an Ipad especially after seeing the open plans in USA, Canada and UK. As usual we in OZ get kicked in the head and asked to say "thank you" for the experience. The Ipad is a media experience. Not a business computer, not a phone. Restricting it to 3, 6, 9 or 12 gigs is liking taking the wheels of an F1 car and expecting the audience still to cheer. Guys - you have lost me until you get it. Oh for some real competition in the ISP space.
