Calm my beating heart! Apple has released a gorgeous new 24 iMac and upgraded the whole iMac line with Intel Core 2 Duo chips. Sexy, fast, roomy. What more could you want?

w00t.jpgCalm my beating heart! Apple has released a gorgeous new 24" iMac and upgraded the whole iMac line with Intel Core 2 Duo chips.

The new 24" model retails at $A2,999 ($A2,699.40 with Apple's educational discount). Apple claims that its 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo chip offers up to 50% more grunt than the previous to-of-the-range 20" iMac.

Intel has doubled the amount of memory in the L2 cache, with the processors now sharing 4MB between them. The end result says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, "is the fastest, biggest and brightest iMac we’ve ever made." I want one. I really, really want one.

The base-level 17" iMac has been reduced to $1549, shaving $450 off the old price, but still features the old 2MB L2 cache and integrated graphics.

A higher-specced $1849 model with the new 4MB L2 cache and 128MB ATI Radeon x1600 retails for $1849.

Some readers speculate that dealers will slash prices on the old models to get them out the door.

Feast your eyes on the new model and all the sweet, sweet details at Apple's web site.

Tim:

Is this a press release, an advertisement or just Diary of a Raving Fanboy? Because it sure isn't a 'news story'.

1. The new Core 2 Duo iMacs appears to have DROPPED in price from the older Core Duo ones. The 17in iMac is now $1549, old one was $1999. Isn't this sufficiently newsworthy to rate a mention? Maybe Tim wetting his pants is reserved only for BIG screens!

2. There are now TWO base model iMacs with Core 2 Duo. The $1549 iMac has a 1.83GHz CPU with only 2MB of L2 cache (your story says they all have 4MB, WRONG, did you even think before you did your cut and paste?) and Intel GMA950 integrated graphics. The $1849 iMac with 2GHz CPU has 4MB L2 cache and ATI Radeon X1600 128MB graphics (same as the previous base model iMac). Why is this not worth being 'news'? This is far more useful and relevant than the obvious addition of a 24in model which sends Tim into carnal shudders.

3. Faced with massive price drop for the new base model iMac, and slightly cheaper price for closest Core 2 Duo equivalent, how will dealers handle existing Core Duo stock? Will we see big bargains as they clear the floor?

Surely you guys can do beter than this pathetic piece of fanboy drool posing as
amateur blogging!

Tim:

Let's also be clear on one thing, that these new iMacs are using the mobile Core 2 Duo "Merom" processor and NOT the desktop Core 2 Duo chip. Not so good if you want _true_ desktop performance but fine for the mobile chip's lower thermals to help keep these new iMacs cool and quiet.

Tim:

Renegade, the original story did not mention the price reduction, it was edited and updated to include thisand more detail only AFTER I posted my comments. Tim (Gaden) did not see fit to tag the story as *UPDATE* which I think is very poor form.

His original story did not mention the price reduction or detail anyuthing about the two 17in iMacs such as one having 2MB cache and integrated graphics, his article just said thay all had 4MB cache.

That's why I posted my comment. I am disappointed at APC allowing the original very lame piece of crap, I am disappointed that they changed the story without saying it was an update, and I am disappointed that when I posed the question of "Will dealers discount older more expensive 17in iMac models to clear them out?", instead of doing basic research like a reporter should and calling Apple stores , Tim (Gaden) just wroite that "Some readers speculate that dealers will slash prices on the old models to get them out the door." This is a pathetic lazy effort.

John:

The 24 inch model looks sweet, but the max graphic card option is just a 7600GT. I think I'll wait for the next edition of the imac. Hopefully it will include a card with GDDR4, HDMI, HDCP, and DX10 support! And by the time that happens maybe it will have the Santarosa architechture, Leopard OS, a blue ray burner, 802.11n and WIMAXe as well. Don't want much, do I?
