Asus Eee 1008HA: more a netbook than a seashell

Asus has made the 1008HA "seashell" official, but we don't sea the resemblance.

Asus has sent around the official press release for the new Eee PC 1008HA Seashell. I see no resemblance to a seashell in the design of the netbook personally. Asus says that the netbook weighs 1.1kg and sports a 10-inch LED backlit LCD and an ergonomically designed keyboard.

Battery life is helped with an intelligent energy management system and the machine features the slick multitouch track pad Asus debuted on netbooks at CES. The ergonomic keyboard puts the right shift key in the correct place and is 92% of full size.

Asus is known for providing some impressive battery life on its netbooks and the 1008HA gets the same treatment with a promise of six hours of run time per charge. Storage for the machine is a 160GB HDD and 10Gb of Eee Storage online is included as well. Integrated Wi-Fi supports 802.11b/g/n networks and the machine uses the not so popular Intel Atom N280 processor that could be pulled from the market early due to lack of demand.

The battery uses new Li-poly technology for a slimmer design with long run time. The machine comes in several colors including white, black, blue, pink, sapphire blue, and red and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR is built in as well. Operating system choices include Windows XP and Linux. 1GB of RAM is included in the machine. Asus is also said to be readying a version of the machine called the 1005HAB that has the same specs that the 1008HA with the addition of a removable battery.

Just picked one up and found out that IT DOESN"T RUN Windows 7 due to Video issues. I had such a great experience with an Acer Aspire One netbook that I though I would upgrade to a slimmer netbook. But after bringing it home last night I found out that there are issues with it going to a black screen when poweing on OR hibernating...
There are some clunky workarounds that work for some but it's not a good choice for Windows 7 beta or RC yet. If you're planning on a netbook for Windows 7 this isn't it yet. Hope they update the bios at some point.
That being said it's a nicely built unit and heals solidly constructed...
