UPDATE | ASUS has advised that the eee PC will only be made available in Australia on a 'special project tender' basis -- not via regular retail channels.

ASUS is to release its bargain basement sub-$400 laptop PC, dubbed "eee PC", in Australia by September.

The eee PC is a small 900MHz Intel mobile CPU-based laptop that boots Linux from 2GB of SSD flash memory -- ASUS says the boot time is just 15 seconds.

It packs 512MB of DDR2-400 RAM, either a 4GB, 8GB or 16GB flash drive for storage, 10/100 ethernet, 802.11b/g wireless and a 56K modem.

There are also USB ports for connection of external hard drives, and an inbuilt 0.3 megapixel webcam, inbuilt stereo speakers and microphone.

It tips the scales at less than a kilogram -- 890g to be precise, and the dimensions are 22.5 x 16.5 cm and 2.1 to 3.5cm deep from the front to the back of the machine.

The display is a seven inch LCD at 800x480 pixels, which sits somewhere between a mobile phone and a low-end computer display in terms of resolution. It won't win any awards for colour brilliance or brightness, but it displays a clear image, and that's perhaps all you could ask for the price.

ASUS is targeting primary school kids from grades three to five who can benefit from learning computer skills but don't necessarily need full computer functionality.

But there are other obvious markets for the eee PC. Ted Chen, managing director of ASUS Australia, said, "Applications on laptops today are mostly online, whether it is checking emails and communicating via other methods such as instant messaging or voice over IP, utilising online share spaces, or simply reading news. Being online has now become a big part of daily computing operations for work and fun, so to accommodate this movement and growing number of users, ASUS has introduced the low-cost and very easy, Eee PC."

Enthusiasts will also no doubt find ways to turn the eee PC into dedicated Torrentputers with the addition of external USB 2.0 hard drives.

It has even been mooted that eee PC could become an ideal set-top box with its lid closed. At under $400, it's cheaper than many dedicated consumer-electronics devices that have limited CODEC support, and given its ability to run Linux, it's not a stretch to imagine that the excellent XBox Media Center, which is currently being ported to Linux, could be installed on the eee PC.

'15 seconds boot time' is still a bit slow in my book, especially considering it's kicking in from a flash drive... but anyway, if the battery life is good enough then this is a perfect machine for anyone who needs office-style productivity and wireless Net access on the go -- be they students or journalists or even some businessfolk.

Dan Warne:

Presumably that's cold boot time though; I would assume there is also a fast restore mode.

Ok, so it's now heading into November. I think I've been pretty patient with waiting for the Eee to be released here in Australia...so why hasn't there been any mention of it? It seems like it suddenly disappeared off the mini-laptop radar. There are sales of the Eee on ebay, but it's at a fairly ridiculous inflated price and postage is a pain ($500+ all up). Does anyone know when we can just get it in Australian stores?

so what does it mean by 'special project tender' basis? im guessing at a couple meanings but not really sure.

29 February 2008, 8:31 PM (1 year ago)report abuse Send to a friend reply

Dan Warne:

meaning ASUS will only supply to bulk purchasers such as schools and government when invited to do so via a tender process.

Asus, Asus, Asus, E. E. E:

There is a suggestion here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=756489&p=1 [on page 18] that we all email Asus & Harvery Norman with the thread, our thoughts and intentions to buy etc so that they reverse their 'tender-only' thingo and make them easily available to us all..

David Flynn:

Maybe Whirlpool should just gather all those who are serious into a clump, get them to ony up a non-refundable 20% deposit up front, and then put out a tender request to Asus to supply Linux-powered subnotebooks with flash drives etc to it for the use of these members. (Yea, I know, the idea is no doubt riddled with impracticalities).

ie. Schools, businesses, that buy a very large number, don't go through any retail chain. They contact the manufacturer directly and get the machines at a substantially reduced price.

why doesn't Walmart just buy a few hundred million of them, then we'll all be happy?

'PC Parts Direct' are considering ordering some units from America. They set up a poll on their homepage ( www.pcpartsdirect.com.au ) to find out how many people are interested.

I am cheered to hear that maybe they will be available in the US - I have a son there. ;-) I can understand why Asus might not want to undermine the notebook market as it is - if the eee is actually a direct threat once optioned up with with enough memory etc. I notice the Ancient Egyptian HP Jordana still brings good money on eBay despite the fact that so far manufacturers have failed in the mini clamshell niche. I think the Asus eee might be just the right size to be a goer. I am also considering the Palm Foleo which is about the same size, but is a US only product and US$500. Interestingly the reviewers don't think the Foleo will succeed, but I think that someone will succeed in this 'just big enough to be useful, just small enough to fit in a large pocket' market. I suspect wireless connectivity, either by phone or Wifi, is the critical difference that opens up this market. The enthusiasm on this thread tells me there is probably now a market. Even if Asus doesn't retail them here they ought to be easy enough to pick up in Asia.

harlowthere:

If Asus continues to play ducks & drakes on the release of this thing to the general public, to protect the extortionate pricing of Intel based notebooks higher up the food chain, then I predict that AMD will partner up with another manufacturer quite soon to cash in on the extremely HIGH PUBLIC DEMAND for this type of cheap flash RAM notebook and ASUS will reap a backlash of angry consumers deserting it's brand because of the "not for sale to the general public, only for corporate buyers" line they seem to be taking. Make no mistake, the net is buzzing with interest in this product and nothing cheeses off the general public more than a SHUT SHOP!

I'm heading to the US at the end of September... will try to pick up a few of these little beauties... may put them up on allclassifieds.com.au or Ebay.... a great concept that will truly change the world, one pc at a time.

Anonymouse:

I doubt we'll see this till October.

It's already mid September and there's no sign of this lappy hitting out shores any time soon.

Also, ignore the special tender basis, that's they're way of saying a company will have exclusive rights for a short period of time.

Think Office Works etc.

I want, but for the orignal US$199 price tag (what's that, AUD$240?). Beowulf cluster in your backpack.

Myer release them for sale on Dec 1st 07, buyers should beware, Asus inform me they do not carry replacement parts in Australia and that faulty units would be replaced under warranty.

What happens when the warranty period is over?

I just received two brand new units from Taiwan both units faulty (I question their quality control, one has several faulty pixels and the other a faulty number 1 key, Asus Australia will not cover it under warranty and inform me parts are not even avialable in Australia therefore I can not even have the units repaired even if I was prepared to pay for it.
