Salivating over the Apple iPhone announced by Steve Jobs this morning? Lick your chops and collect that drool - Apple Australia says it won't be available in Australia until 2008 -- at least a year from now.

Of course, that's not to say there won't be a healthy trade in black-market iPhones on eBay as soon as they're released in the US. Just don't expect to get them cheap.

It'll be released in the US six months from now in June (Apple hasn't even got FCC approval for the hardware yet, such is Jobs' focus on secrecy), then in Europe ‘later in the year' and Asia Pacific in 2008, according to Marketing Manager Rob Small.

Small could not say why the phone would be so delayed in the Asia Pacific region.

Pricing for the phones is not set for Australia, but Apple US said they would cost $US499 ($A639) for a 4GB version and $US599 ($A767) for an 8GB version.

However, it's likely when it does arrive that it'll be on the Telstra GSM network: it is the only network in Australia that supports the EDGE technology the phone uses for highish-speed data transfer (at about 100Kbit/s).

Apple's US-centric approach will also probably see a single carrier deal stitched-up in each region. Apple has already signed up US telco Cingular to distribute the phone exclusively in the US.

Apple's choice of EDGE (2.5G) over the more common WCDMA (3G) mobile technology is probably explained by the substantially faster CPUs available for EDGE devices.

Although Apple hasn't disclosed which CPU it is using in the phone, the likely reason for Apple's choice of EDGE over WCDMA 3G is that the sole manufacturer of WCDMA chips is Qualcomm and they're not nearly as fast as Intel's PXA chips (now divested to Marvell).

The latest PXA320 chip from Marvell runs at 820MHz, and given Apple's heavy graphical functionality in the iPhone, it's likely it has built the phone around this chip.

Until recently, most phone manufacturers have chosen the slowest chip that can viably run their software in order to eke out maximum battery life. Apple appears to have taken a different approach with the iPhone: it will only last five hours of talk/browsing/email or 16 hours of audio playback.

David Flynn:

Depending on how 'smart' the iPhone is at handling email and attachments (especially through the touted Yahoo mobile email service which was trotted out during the keynote), 100Kbps is okay for email and surfing.

And personally, I'm happy to wait until 2008 for an iPhone. Given Apple's track record of flawed first-gen products, I'm fine with letting the US early adopters uncover any bugs so that Apple can squash 'em and have a second-gen iPhone -- probably with even higher capacity and longer battery life -- ready this time next year.

I'm not big on Apple at all, but this looks like something I'd almost actually buy...

Limitations I don't like are:
* Harsh battery life could be bad when away from home
* GSM. Not that keen on spending big on what is now old technology.
* Possibility of being available only via Telstra. I think we all know their attitude to data pricing.

If it was available now, I'd consider it. But with it only becoming available in about a year, it will likely seem silly.

I just cannot believe why people love apple products so much.
1)For half the money you can get a mp3 player with fm radio and multi-format interface that Blows Ipod out of the water for value.
2)OS What????. Its a windows world, deal with it.
3)2008!! Im not waiting that long for anything

1) Really, what device would that be? (it's an iPod world - you deal with it)
2) OSX is my way of dealing with the fact that it's a Windows world, helps me sleep at night.
3) No Vista for you then, you've been waiting far too long...

I love my Windows PCs (x3 in my home office), but Apple do consumer electronic devices better (ala iPod, and to some extent Macs).

The usability of this looks far better than my Windows Mobile Smartphone - but perhaps for my wife. (She owns a Mac, too)

5 hours of video/phone/email and 16 hours of audio are really good. He did not dislose the standby time, however. The standby time is most likely in the range of 72-120 hours, so you don't have to run home twice a day to charge it unless your just watching a lot of movies or playing games all the time. Yes, I said games.

You're complaining about Asia Pacific getting the phone in 2008. What are we up in Canuck land supposed to say? Canada wasn't even mentioned in the list of places getting the phone! Everything was US, Europe, Asia Pacific ... And no, Steve doesn't use US as in North America, just like we don't have movies in iTunes Store up here in Canada. Heh, enough of a rant, it's pretty damned cool device though.

GeneRayburn:

Believe me, in this case the US terminology does include Canada - almost never is a "US" release date for hardware excluding Canada, and especially not when it's gonna be a worldwide product anyway. Your iTunes reference is different as media companies like to control how music and TV is distributed in different countries, so that's why single-country music stores exist.

For something we wont see until 2008 I'm sick of seeing it already! I know January can be a slow month for technology but really, all this fanfare for another GSM handset, and from all accounts not even a very good one? 3 sequential APC articles, informercials on technology leaders like ACA, every media news channel running a piece.
Imagine the saturation we would have seen if someone had released something even more revolutionary like say a different kind of spark plug, the news pieces would continue for days.
Come to think of it now apple has found marketing over innovation will sell form over function then all I can suggest is they get the crayons working on the new I-Plug without delay. It's sure to take the world by storm, soon there wont be a Hyundai excel out there not running 4 I-Plugs.

Sure, don't get me wrong, it looks like an awesome device, but do we really need All-In -One?

I mean, in this day and age of technology, there is such a need to squeeze a whole lot of features into one device. Now in a lot of cases this it great, it means we don't have to carry around a whole lot of devices, but a phone, the internet/email, and entertainment system in one?

The first two I can see potential, because there is a need for business people to have a phone and access to email on the internet on the go. However, I'm not sure about the latter. I mean, it would be a lot better to have a Mp3/Video player separate to the Phone, for many reasons. If you were watching an episode of a tv show on the train, you wouldn't want to be worrying about wasting the battery, and the fact that if you watch another episode, you will not have enough battery power to get through the rest of the day with phone conversations. This currently would not occur by having a separate Mp3 player to your phone because even if you do use up all your battery on that, you still are able to use your phone. And what would happen if the Mp3 part of it failed? You would have to send off the entire unit and be without a Mp3 Player and a Phone. It's a bit like component systems.

Anyway, that was my long-winded personal opinion.

NextG is for me:

I'm with you...!

All of these people who continually bag Telstra have clearly never left "the big smoke". Try roaming in rural spots, Telstra haters. And I don't mean "down the coast" or in Port Douglas. I mean inland, truly rural spots, see how far your 3 handset, Optus 3G or Vodafone trash gets you then.

The iPhone looks good, but not good enough for me. NextG is the way to go and if I wanted an unservicable device then I'd already own an iPod. I don't know why Apple would want to drop "Computer" from their name. Regardless of their strong following with the iPod, I believe their computers were the best thing going for them.

Anyone who is truly "mobile" will not be able to use the iPhone due to its atrocious talk time and if the only way to get around this would be to avoid using the iPhone for media then why bother with the device at all?!

Yeah NextG you cant move in the outback for feral Combi wagons full of cockies online accessing their Telstra shares online via thier notebooks.
Get a clue the only additional coverage the bush got has was due to a lot of government pressure and subsidisation that no longer exist.
With Telsta believing their own line that they should be subsidised and and Telstra's need to keep high dividends happening for shares that are worth less than an analogue handset in the bush, how much rural spending do you think will continue?

Hey
Telstra are really sneaky with their contracts and how they world their advertising if you're not careful you will be hit with unexpected costs. Also data pricing from all telcos are ridiculous. I downloaded 1 movie clip and it cost me $25!
I'm very happy with optus. If you don't go rural (which I never do and i'm sure many others don't either) competition is great.

I want an iphone but if its only on telstra. No way!

ok, as a staff member of telstra, i believe that people who are stupid enough to download clips without a browser pack of some sort than you are stupid. Also i havent heard anything of the IPHONE to telstra but Apple would be stupid to not pick Telstra as the phone isnt Next G or 3G there is only one option EDGE network which is exclusive to Telstra. Love us or Hate us we run the telecomunications market in Australia, not SingTel Optus or any other Tag Carier.

charges but seeing as you don't know anything let
me enlighten you. It's only $2 per m/b and every other carrier is at least $15 or more per m/b.And as far as not going rural it just means that Optus don't care about anyone except certain customers? Sounds like bad cus/service to me.

This is going to be fantastic. I have only been using Apple since the MacBook was released and now i cant believe i waited so long. They are by far a better machine and i should now be a spokesman for Apple as i have had NO problems with my MacBook or Ipod. My last computer was a Dell and all i can say is Never Again. Apple may be a little more pricey but they make up for it in every way possible. I would rethink using Telstra though i hate Telstra( Vodaphone or Optus woul be a better option)

I think Telstra is just fine, if you are dumb enough to go for a raw deal then thats your problem. Telstra has great deals and coverage.

iPhone will be great with Telstra
my only question is - do you have to put in a SIM card or any of that, or is it taken care of?

because you would need to be able to take care of plans etc. or put in your existing one

Secondly, (sort of) is there any cost to browse internet, or do you just need to be Wi-Fi connected to a Wireless router etc...

These things havent really been made clear to me yet

I don't really care who has iPhone, but I think Aust should have one 3G 850 Network inplace, that all carriers use. (i.e a government owned 3G 850 network) and they wholesale it to the retailers. Then Telstra, Optus, Voda, etc can compete on price and service. And iPhone should be 3G 850 for high speed data (upto 3Mega Bit/s).
However, remember a couple of things.
1. Telstra is the only Australian owned Telco. All others are owned by overseas business's. Also Optus is owned by the Singapore Government, and I will not give another Government 1 cent of my money.
2. Telstra is forced to sell its whole business way under what it costs them to maintain it. So therefore is the reason why some of Telstra's pricing is really high.
3. Telstra is not allowed by law to under price its competition on the retail front. Telstra can only match a competitors price. Now, does this sound like fair competition? How would you go running your own business with these rules?

It would be alot better if we had multiple companies so no one will get upset or angry. I wish apple could at least done that for us aussies and i wish i had one too despite the downfalls of the iphone. :)

apple make some great products that are stylish, not to expensive, easy to use, but still, most importantly, functional.

however, they seem to be very one-track minded with all their products too. no changing batteries.. they shove itunes and quicktime down your throat- too bad for the 500 million or so people that prefer windows software like windows media player or even just drag and dropping from folders..

and now- no changing carriers, which is very important in a fast growing and ever expanding technology environment like in australian cities.

in short- great products but no versatility, apple. your products are locked down far too much.
