Clevo M980NU is a beast of a gaming machine with a price tag not for the faint of heart.

I am a sucker for a sexy, hardware packed gaming notebook even if it isn't that practical for many uses outside of gaming. AVADirect has announced that it is now selling the Clevo M980NU gaming notebook and odds are you will be able to find some doppelgangers of this machine branded by several different companies. Pioneer Computers is one Australian company that has sold Clevo computers in the past -- labelled Pioneer Computers -- for example.

The M980NU is claimed to be the world's most powerful gaming computer and sports a large 18.4-inch LCD with 1080p resolution. The rig uses an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad CPU and can even be had with a Core 2 Extreme processor crammed inside. Graphics are handled by either a single NVIDIA GTX 280M 1GB video card or a pair of the same beasties in SLI mode.

RAM is up to 8GB of 1066/1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM and the massive machine has enough space inside its chassis for up to three internal hard drives in RAID 0,1 configuration. Other features include HDMI out, DVI out, VGA out, and a trio of USB ports. The machine even has an eSATA and a FireWire port. The latter is something you typically only see on Mac computers.

Expansion capabilities are covered by a single 34/54 Express Card slot. The rig can also support a pair of MiniCards making WLAN modules an option along with a TV tuner. Rounding out the features list are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 3-megapixel webcam. The machine starts at $US2493.85 ($AUD3024); I shudder to think what a fully loaded version would sell for.

My experiences with Clevo laptops (with one of them also being branded Pioneer) says you'd be crazy to buy one, let alone one that costs 3 grand.

Agreed, those things are absolute garbage. Worst build quality I've ever seen in a laptop/desktop replacement and hideously unreliable.
