Dell Streak: Tablet? No way. Giant mobile phones are back.

We had another play with Dell's Streak after its Australian pricing was announced and came away convinced it will usher in a new era of giant phones, like those of the 1970s.

Is that my giant phone ringing?

It's been widely labelled as a smallish tablet, a phone & web browsing device that sits somewhere between an iPhone and an iPad. And yesterday, Dell announced its availability in Australia from October, with Optus pricing of  $0 upfront on an AUD$59 Cap or $649 standalone.

But after another look at the Dell Streak today, it's obvious that, even with a large screen of 5in, it's not significantly harder to accommodate in your daily life than an iPhone 4, which has a 3.5in screen. Unlike the iPad, which needs its own special parking wherever you take it, the Streak can easily fit into jacket pocket. It really is just a bigger-than-normal Android phone.

In fact, we're convinced the Streak will herald a new era of giant phones. We'll carry them and coddle them just like our parents did the first giant mobile bricks in the 1970s. Why? Because a screen of 5in seems to be the true threshold for enjoyable and uncrippled  mobile web surfing. The photos below show how websites like the Bureau of Meteorology and the Sydney Morning Herald appear on it - in full, as they do on a normal computer screen.

All of BOM fits on the screen, at a thoroughly legible size.

Blow up the text for even greater clarity.

No need to read the mobile versions of sites like the SMH, as the real thing works fine.

The Streak's Snapdragon processor easily crunches videos.

YouTube seems perfect for this device.

Oh, and it's a phone!

Puzzlingly, the Streak will ship with the dated 1.6 version of Android, but Dell say an update to 2.2 will be made available later this year. If you like to surf the web on your mobile, just 1.5 inches of extra screen real estate make all the difference.

Oh - nice... I almost got one off eBay last week. Glad I didn't since they're almost all going for about $100 more than that - and come with a foreign charger.
The 1.6 thing puts me off though. But if 2.2 is coming later this year, there's not much time left for it to appear.

Is it going to sell only through Optus, or will it be sold by Dell too?

Oh, cool... Last time I looked for it (about 3 weeks ago) it just didn't show up at all on the au site.

Damn it! It's up now listed as available from Optus... Looks like Dell will NOT be selling direct.

I'm very disappointed. Not keen to buy from Optus (afraid of what they might have done to the ROM).

Edit: Not that it matters apparently... Can't buy it outright anyway by the looks of things. WTF!?!?!

For people on the go, like truck drivers working for transport companies, this phone is too big to carry around, not to mention is far complex to use.
Some may prefer the simplicity of a flip design as well, rather than playing around with a useless toy like the Iphone.
Now it seems every company want to mimic that in order to sell more.
The world does not get enough!

Not really. Plenty of companies were selling phones similar to the iPhone well before the iPhone. If anyone copied to boost sales, it was Apple.

It probably is too big for some people, but for the target market (basically technology nuts), it's fine. I'm gonna get one because of the size. I used to carry a Casio handheld that was about the same size (maybe bigger)... And I carried a Nokia 8110 with it.

Too big for some, maybe, but after a quick look back at the keypad picture, I started thinking of the elderly who have a horrible time with the miniature keyboards on basic phones.

I like the iPad and can see uses for it, but it certainly won't fit in a pocket of my business suit. Mobile phones are just that shade too small in the screen (especially if you are trying to use a virtual keyboard). I'm attracted to the idea of the Streak because of its sensible size.

it would be a nice size for watching videos on the train and it wouldn't draw as much unwanted attention as an ipad

Gorgeous pics, though I really cant imagine tucking it into the back pocket. In my view it is a clunky form factor - too big as a phone and too small as a tablet. If you have the Streak, you will certainly need a second regular sized phone for the usual phone type jobs.

+1 on the iPad parking space comment :D

If you did shove it in your back pocket it would ever snap in two, or tear out your pocket when you sit down! (either way the LCD will die)

I got the streak through Optus on the $59 cap. I've had it for a week now and I must say that I really like it. It is a lot wider and taller then the iphone 4 however its as thin as the iphone 4. I wouldn't slide it into your back pocket because it doesn't bend to shape your butt lol so it will obviously break. It slides perfectly into your front pockets though. It weights a little but doesn't hurt your arm holding it. It functions fast and the sensor is as great as iphone 4's. Does eat battery power depending on what your doing (be good if you cn put it on charge when you get to work or through the day before leaving the office again). I've just installed a program on my PC that allowed me to link my Streak up in iTunes and sync my itunes music up directly which I love. Love the great big screen to use. I don't think you'll be disappointed as long as you can get over the size.
