We know a gaming PC when we see one.
The gamer is the great white wale of the PC industry. Gamers are the sort of consumer who will drop big bucks on a desktop computer and then toss it away a year later to get their hands on the shiny new technology that comes out. Gamers are exactly the type of consumers that major computer makers like to woo.
Dell has launched its latest
gaming/multimedia computer called the XPS 435. The desktop rig starts at £1699 ($AU3514) including Europe's VAT and delivery charges. For that much loot you get an attractive desktop computer sporting a range of Intel Core i7 CPUs, DDR3 tri-channel RAM, and graphics from ATI/AMD. As expected in a desktop, the machine runs Windows Vista.
Above: Dell XPS 435. Hope it comes with a polishing cloth. At the bottom of the range sits the entry-level model running a 2.9GHz CPU, 6GB of DDR3 RAM, a 512MB ATI HD 4850 video card, and a 750GB HDD. The integrated optical drive can be upgraded to Blu-ray and faster processors are available as well as up to 24GB of RAM and 4.5TB of storage. I shudder to think what a fully optioned beast would cost; you will probably need to sell a kidney to get one.
Technically the XPS 435 isn’t considered a gaming rig by Dell, but I know a gaming PC when I see one and this is a gaming PC in multimedia clothing. In case you are wondering, you don’t need a beast like this to edit photos, make videos, and watch Blu-ray films. Heck, you don’t even need a machine like this for PC gaming, but it sure is nice.
The Australian Dell website is showing
a model that comes with a 2.66GHz processor; we're waiting to hear back from Dell Australia whether that's an
old model or the current model with a lower system spec for Australia.
