DirectX 11 games break cover at Windows 7 launch

DiRT 2 and other games have been polished way beyond their console cousins as Windows gamers get ready for the next-next-gen.

Game fans had been muttering recently about the delay in the launches of several PC games, when their console counterparts were already strutting their stuff. Codemaster's Colin McRae DiRT 2 was one of the prime absentees. The reason for its absence is that the developers have been using the power of the latest video cards and DirectX 11 functions to add a little more gloss, as you can tell from this video.

Shown at the New York Windows 7 launch, the result is huge crowds and individual characters can now be accurately created and given life and individuality thanks to tessellation. Water now looks and reacts to disturbance like water, while lighting effects are getting ever closer to perfection. Post-processing effects also allow frames to be tarted up before presented on-screen to add additional effects.

Other games to receive the benefits of this high-powered video touch-up include the new Aliens vs. Predator, BattleForge and the next Crysis title. While the effects are only incremental its just another little nudge that could see gamers upgrading to newer ATI or Nvidia hardware, but will it spark a general interest in new PCs? We doubt it. You can find out more about DirectX 11 on the Microsoft page.

"...but will it spark a general interest in new PCs?" - Geoff Spick.

Of course not. Gamers upgrade pc components, not buy pc's as new game titles come out.

And as retailers, we wouldn't want it any other way.

I was thinking the same... Most of that isn't exactly a big deal. But then, I tend to be more interested in the GAME not the shininess of it.

You must have found that great text game 'Zork' a hoot!

As a gamer, if you can't appreciate how better graphics ehances a good than I'm not too sure you can call yourself a gamer.

Here's a few examples.

Doom vs Crysis
C&C vs Company of Heroes
Thief vs Assassin's Creed

All of these are great games and fine examples of their genre but if you can honestly tell me that the later don't add to gameplay becuase of their superior graphics than I think you, Tin, as a self confessed gamer, are bashing MS just for the sake of it.

The number of people on this forum that just won't let of of the past is amazing. You know what, the good old days just weren't that good!

Just re-install Doom or Zork and just see how bad these games are !

Not content to launch the most talked software in the planet, Microsft is using all its resources to make sure everyone are convinced and buy the latest gizmos to extend the lust of power when playing the latest games.
These people are suffering the Adonis complex, where their lives is evolving around the games they play in their souped up and expensive machines, more redundant is buying a console and hook-up to the TV which is a lot much better tough the games are cheap enough to buy and play, this will not compare with the outrageous spending for the ultimate machine in the universe.
These bunch are doomed!
