First NBN customer connected

A Whirlpool user claims to be the first customer to be connected to the NBN in Tasmania, and Senator Conroy has called a press conference for 10.30AM.

Speculation that the first customers in Tasmania are now receiving National Broadband Network services is running high today, with one vocal member of broadband forum Whirlpool claiming to be connected and a press conference scheduled for this morning with Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and NBN Co.

The Federal Government and NBN Co have for some time been promising that the first customers on the NBN will receive services from July of this year. But even as late as Monday Conroy and NBN Co chief Mike Quigley were unable to name a precise date for the landmark first connections to go live.

But it appears that one Tasmanian customer may have jumped the gun.

“Well guys my NBN conection is LIVE :) and it absolutely flys!!!!” wrote one poster on the forums of broadband site Whirlpool late this afternoon. “Will post again later when I have finished playing…. :)”

“Bob” claims to be from Midway Point – one of the first three communities in Tasmania – and the whole of Australia – to be connected to the NBN. A month ago on 2nd June he posted photos of what appeared to be a NBN network termination unit on the outside of his house.

And he has also claimed to be an early stage Internode NBN customer – one of the four providers known to have signed up to provide retail NBN services in Tasmania.

“Ahhh I do believe this would be the 1st [Whirlpool] post from the NBN (Home user anyway :P) correct me if I am wrong, do I get some kind of prize???” he asked. APC was not immediately able to contact the Whirlpool user to verify the claim.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and Quigley have scheduled a press conference for tgus morning at 10:30AM to be held in Melbourne. An NBN Co spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed enquiry on what the press conference would be about. UPDATE: it's to formally announce that the NBN operations centre will be based in Melbourne.

The confirmation of the first live services to be delivered over the NBN will be seen as a significant milestone in the construction of the network. In addition, the Opposition has repeatedly lampooned the Government over the fact that no services have been delivered over the network since the NBN policy was announced in late 2007.

On Monday at a press conference Quigley reiterated the first NBN services would be delivered in the “early part of July”, while Conroy said the “July” commitment had been subject to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s diary and would now be subject to the diary of new Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Conroy said the date would be “in the first couple of weeks in July without any problems at all”.

3 years and how many millions and we have one subscriber connected to the brave new world of an internet service. Conroys genius is really paying dividends, at this rate the rest of the nation will be on sometime this century. At an ultimate cot of who knows what.

Electoral stunt, much.

Would you prefer Tony Abbot not doing it at all? Who knows how long before we get fast broadband then...

Not doing what exactly? There are a lot of things I'd prefer Mr Abbott not to do. What stroke of genius made you equate Mr Abbott's statement re halting the NBN, with doing nothing at all?

Who know how long it will take now, and more to the point how much will it ultimately cost?

My estimate would be not much later than 2012 when Wimax 2 is slated to become available and vivid wireless upgrade to it

One small city, three roughly five-kilometre-radius-circles around Sydney universities and two similar areas around Melbourne universities by the end of July, actually.

Once these are up, it will be similar areas in Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra by January 2011, then no doubt will be expanded to the rest of the metro areas.

Whooptidoo...
Hardly a mass population covering still. And by January 2011, you say... Well I'll just sit and wait for Vivid Wireless to come to my home town then - should be here by about 2101 at this rate...

BTW, Vivid Wireless make no mention of this impending rollout on their own website - I did check it.

that (New user):

Channel 7 reckon it's 1.25 million people plus the population of Perth (excluding blackspots). But still, that is hardly massive. And I managed to find one reference to it on vivid's website (very close to the plans to bulldoze Arthur Dent's house, though) at http://www.vividwireless.com.au/unwired. And yes, they really could speed it up a bit (or a lot...)

Did they try it in Tasmania first so that if they had some sort of problem,it would be isolated and the rest of Australia wouldn't hear about it.Hi-Ho "Raindog" what's happening :)
