First Free iPhone unlocking solution released

BREAKING |The first free iPhone unlock solution has just been released, making it possible for Australians to use the iPhone on Optus, Telstra and Vodafone at no extra cost.

Yesterday's announcement from Apple that it had sold one million iPhones since its launch 74 days ago was impressive enough - but the really exciting news breaking today is that the iPhone Dev group has just released a free software hack that unlocks the iPhone.

Word is still spreading but already the team has set up an official website here that provides simple step-by-step instructions. For those averse to command line interfaces Engadget is reporting that a GUI version will be released shortly. Apparently the whole process takes less than 30 minutes.

This is great news for all those around the world waiting for an iPhone, but bad news for iPhonesimfree, who just invested a lot of time and energy setting up a crack-for-fee program.

At this time it's unknown whether this free hack is restore-resistant like the iPhonesimfree hack - but it may be.

As this solution has just been released expect ongoing discussion and analysis - along with user accounts and confirmation that the hack works. I'll be giving it a try in the next day or so and will report back on my success/failure.

Didn't we want to stay proprietary?

Bummer for Apple and AT&T. AT&T doesn't have that exclusive a deal anymore, and Apple won't be getting the contract kick back for each iPhone / Apple Subscriber.

Good news for consumers, between this and the price drop, the iPhone starts looking more attractive.

OS X is a *nix variant, right? I don't think this is actually a surprise to Apple at all. Some have argued that Apple anticipated and counted on this happening. While AT&T might be more surprised, I don't think anyone is surprised anymore when people figure out workarounds for such things. I think the lockdown was supposed to dissuade most people (which it will) and get many to switch to AT&T (which it did). More people buying the iPhone certainly won't cost Apple anything.

Well, that's one hurdle out of the way. Only 2 more and I'll consider getting one. And they are:
* 3rd party software support/SDK (web browser based stuff is crap).
* 3G hardware.
