I'm planning to upgrade my 19" monitor to at least a Dell 24". Has anyone got any
views on whether it is worth spending twice as much to get a 30" monitor.

I think I'd prefer one large monitor to multiple monitors.

Im looking at 24" monitors too. The cheapest one at the local PC store I go to (www.umart.com.au) is an AOC and sells for ~$499.

I'd say if you have the money for a 24", get one, because they are a great size and a great resoloution.

The problem with 27" monitors and cheaper 30" monitors is that they retain the same resoloution as a 24", which means everything is larger, and not as sharp.

If you're upgrading from a 19 inch, you're likely to find that a 24 is already more than large enough for your average desktop - I upgraded from a 17 inch three months ago, and I'm still not that accustomed to it!

Anyway, the previous poster is right in saying that the resolutions you get from larger monitors is not likely to be as good, unless you pay BIG - most larger monitors are aimed for TV use, and thus have resolutions along the lines of 1366 x 768 and etc, so pay attention to that first.

In my opinion, you're much better off getting a nice 24 inch with good inputs (HDMI or component along with the usual) as it is much better value and really, if the screen gets too large it can be actually detrimental to a lot of health-related things.

The one I use? A BenQ G2400W. Its great - HDMI, DVI, VGA, colour is a tad dull but more accurate than usual. And, you can now get it for just over $400!

(Be forewarned, shipping is a tad slow)

QLDers get it even better, at $388 from UMart:

Currently there are alot of new 24" monitiors coming out from various manufacturers and they're all not too shabby. the stand out of all these in my Book is the DELL 2408WFP. it delivers sound performance and reasonable pricing if you happen to get lucky.

in fact recently there have been some quite decent deals on this model being done by dell. i myself am planning on acquiring one just as soon as the dollar rises against the greenback to save me a little of my hard earned.

have had experience with DELL with numerous customer laptops and they deliver decent Qos. both during the sales process and afterwards.

DELL 2408WFP - very good. if you look in the right places you can get this for under $700 brand new delivered with 5 yrs warranty.

One thing to be aware of is HDMI inputs. I bought a Samsung SyncMaster 225MS because it was advertised as having an HDMI input. It does, but the HDMI input will not accept input from a computer.

Other than that, you will never look back if you purchase a large screen monitor. It makes working with a computer far better as well as easier on the eyes.
