I use a notebook PC as my primary work computer and, about two months ago, finally got around to buying an extension monitor for it - why didn't I do this years ago!
Having two screens radically changes the way you work. Being able to have multiple documents, browsers and other apps all open at the same time has done wonders for my productivity.
Still using a single monitor? You're mad. Stump up the cash for a second one, and you'll love it.

I've got a longstanding problem with this concept: what happens when you hit the road with your notebook and are forced to use a single screen? Most people I know who use multiple monitors say they can't imagine not having them, but it ain't practical if you're on the road constantly to drag a single screen with you. Better to learn to work with the single screen you've got. And if you want to be smug about it, you can point to all that wasted power . . .

That's a fair point. I admit that I do feel like I've got my right hand tied behind my back when I'm working on the road with just the notebook screen.
But that pain is not enough to make me ditch the extra screen real estate when at the desk.
Nor is my heartfelt desire to save the planet :)

Oh, I know soo many people who have gone the dual monitor route and they love it to bits. Especially if you manage to wrangle two flat screens -- maybe an older 15-17 inch panel and a lush new 20+ panel -- it's truly the bee's knees for super-efficient working.

But I'm with Gus on this one: my main working machine is a notebook, and I'm so often out of the office -- in the city, on trips, even just out in my apartment's courtyard for a change of scenery -- that I've resisted going down the dual-monitor route because I'm afraid they will be too hard to live without!

That's actually the same reason I still make do with the notebook's keyboard rather than a more sensible and ergonomic desktop keyboard: having to shift gears from one keyboard to the other just takes a bit too much adjustment for me.

Oh, and as for power usage and saving the planet, I saw a TV profile on Al Gore and he had two HUGE Apple Cinema Displays on the desk in his home-office (of course, being on the board of Apple he probably gets a bit of a discount on this stuff). So if it's good enough for Mr Inconvenient Truth, Ian, then it's gotta be good enough for you!

I have to admit that I've got head-first into the whole multi-monitor thing. My primary machines are desktops though, so that certainly helps. My main work machine runs 3 x 19" LCDs and the secondary one runs two. My work/gaming machine at home uses a single 24" widescreen LCD (which is probably overkill, because the damn thing gets too hot).

Interestingly, I have no problem moving back to a single-screen system like a laptop, but I do struggle with a small screen, especially one with a conventional ratio....I much prefer widescreen notebooks.

Dual monitors are the way to go. I have two monitors attached to my main computer, and they just help my productivity when working on most things. I don't really like using single monitored computers anymore. Even playing music sounds different when I turn my secondary monitor off (don't ask me how that works.)

I've been using dual monitors at work for about 9 years now, I find it hugely crippling when I go off-campus for a meeting and have to work from a smaller, single, laptop monitor.

I've been wondering whether in the future laptop manufacturers might look at these rollable display technologies to facilitate multi-monitor by simply pulling the sides of a screen in each direction thereby making one extra long desktop? Perhaps we'll get holographic displays before then? I dare to dream!

I have 16 monitors all running on clone. And I use them all simultaneously.....

Just because I can.
