I flicked to the APC homepage today and was dumbfounded when I was greeted by and advertisement for Olay. I have no problem with APC advertising on its website and I realise that there are female readers of APC, but APC is NOT New Idea . . . better known as No Idea for very good reasons! I would be more the happy to read about Olay and similar products if someone were to give me a full frontal lobotomy. I do not want to see advertisements for tampons, babies nappies, other feminine hygiene products nor beauty and skin care products on what is a respected technical website. APC is a highly credible technical magazine and so such advertisements are really quite inappropriate for the APC website.

I'd quit while your ahead Pete, if you look at the volume advertisers we could just as easy have adds for gentlemans enhancement, hair replacement and online casinos. As for hitting the target market the clearosil contract could not be better served.

I wrote to Tony Sarno, Editor of APC. He responded and agrees with me and is going to raise the issue with his management. I think that is something of a win and I congratulate Tony on his attitude to this issue.
I agree that there is a fair bit of "grey" as to what is and is not appropriate advertising, but there is plenty of black and white too! Clearly, technology ad's fit into the white, but equally as clearly, ad's about womens' products, in my opinion, fit clearly in the black area. I've no desire to one day open APC and be greeted by tampon ad's :-)

A win would be some actual change.

Correct althought the major media doesn't share that view if advertising content on after 11pm TV is any indication.

I've no desire to continually have to take measures to can those innane side-bar ads either. For the best part (excluding those smarmy informercial pages masquerading as articles) the ads in APC mag are relevant, approriate and at times even a feature. It's a pity that does not always carry over to the website and instead much like the popular media sites we get adds that annoy adds that intrude.
I can go through the day scarecly noticing the banner adds that dont interest me, while don't disagree the adds for body goop are not appropriate they are far less annoying than those innane scroll bar popups.

I really don't notice adds on commercial sites 99% of the time and I assume that web advertising is so cheap per unit that the advertisers (like Olay) are happy to waste 99% of their online advertising budget on spamming totally disinterested readers.
OTOH, I do tend to notice adds on sites where they make an effort to keep them relevant and un-annoying (for me, Linux.com is a good example). Popups of any kind are the pits and if anything does pop up (on machines where I can't use a blocker), I immediately close them or the whole page.

Agree, I take similar actions. Have these advertisers ever stopped to think what the net result of annoying their targets will be? Large quantities of intrusive advertising wont reverse my negative impressions of Telstra or those in regards an innefectual state government. Their respective big spends on annoying ways to advertise have actually reinforced the negative impressions already held.

I totally agree with the OP.....
BUT I have too say I've never seen 1 single ad on here...Oh that's right I used a ad blocker :P
To the APC Team the OP does have a point tho!!!
This is a tech site....tech ads fair enough but none of that other crap.
To the OP - Get a ad blocker dude, then you wont ever have to see ads again lol

Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I am aware APC themselves don't actually decide who advertises (or, they may have ways to block particular ads, but don't sit and approve each individual one), instead it is Ninemsn or whoever else APC or their publishers have contracted to take care of advertising.
But, to the OP, you have done the right thing and report it to APC. Well done!

That may well be correct, but if it becomes apparent that the type of advertsing present is upsetting enough site visitors (which looks to be the case) then it would be foolish not to address the issue.
MiCCAS wrote: or, they may have ways to block particular ads, but don't sit and approve each individual one
That is simply speculation. You would be better to direct your suggestion directly to APC foa a definitive answer.

May well be so but duck-shoving the responsibility, will not make a problem go away despite best efforts of those involved in the areas of workplace safety.
