we all know that the official release of windows 7 is coming out...but here is the question...is it really worth it?

Microsoft personally know that people are dying to get another windows edition, considering how much hate and disgust people have put towards vista....[which i personally never had any problems with]

that being said, most people right know are probably still using windows XP....or are reluctantly using windows vista. business's and government offices may or may not switch to windows 7, as they are cautious due to the windows vista screw up. but....what is always right is not always popular as they say......

i have tried the windows 7 RC beta version of windows 7, and i did not really see any real difference. seriously. whatever money Microsoft is charging for windows 7, i can assure you....unless you absolutely cannot stand windows vista, [which unfortunately for many people is true] i don't think the money is worth it. they said to have fixed any driver compatibility issues, but i never experienced any. other people may have, i guarantee you, i mean, come on. this is windows for Pete sake.

were talking about a operating system that has already consumed 90% of the worlds OS choice. and like always......other company are ganging up on Microsoft for having a "monopoly" in the OS world. which is not true. there are other operating systems out there. Linux, mac OS, and free dos are a few. so basically Microsoft is getting sued by butt hurt company's because people just love Microsoft's operating system to death.

windows vista was an important step for the succession of the windows family, and ultimately, the creation of windows 7 bill gates said.

should you buy windows 7, great. that's up to you. but if you were not to buy windows 7, i hope no one flames you. because in the end, its your money your spending. use it wisely =]

Let me see:

1- most people are right now using XP, because Vista was next to unusable in its original guise.
2- most businesses didn't bother upgrading to Vista.

and yet Microsoft releases W7 with an upgrade path that only works from Vista?

I can sooooooo see the crowds of 1) and 2) above rushing to buy a Vista upgrade so they can then buy the W7 upgrade...

Talk about shooting themselves on the foot!

And no, I don't buy APC's argument that folks will install W7 new and forget about upgrades:
for starters, the full price version is too expensive.
On top of that I cannot see businesses out there reinstalling ALL their software just because Microsoft can't get their act together and finally admit that an upgrade path from Vista is ridiculous.

Nup: W7 will remain in the distant future for me and many others.
At least until Microsoft makes it easier to upgrade from XP.
And if that doesn't happen, I'll gladly go Linux.

It's not about the OS anymore, it hasn't been for a looooong time!

I never do an upgrade from an OS, always a clean install on a seperate hdd so i can still get access to the old files from the old HDD.

In regarsd to full price versus upgrade, you can buy the upgrade win 7 if you have XP. It is not a requirement that you have vista to purcahse windows 7 at Upgrade pricing.

Running Windows Vista?
If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in -place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).

Running Earlier Versions?
If you have Windows XP, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications. If you’re running Windows 2000, you’ll need to purchase the full product and do a clean install.

(from windows 7 store site)

Most business only install onto 1 machine, then image and roll them out, so they only have to install the Software once.

I did find it amusing that you would go to linux if you cant find an easier way to upgrade from XP.

Wait you will have to install software again if you did that anyway.

Please at least look at the information about upgrade licensing requirements before commenting again.

Isn't it great. Most of us got to pay for an abysmal OS called Vista and now we get to pay even more for its replacement. You bloody ripper. Yes, every bit of sarcasm is intended!

No! Most of us didn't have to!

Let's keep it in the spirit of the OP, shall we?

Win 7 ....... Yay?

Yes! Well for me at least.

I've had the RC running now for a couple of months and have found things slicker and more stable with my GPU (AMD 4870 in Crossfire). Which is a little surprising considering I'm running most of the drivers that were coded for Vista.

Apps and gaming is rock solid. Gaming performance at the moment is not as good as MS would have us believe but it is marginally better and with the OEM drivers jumping on board early this time, the drivers will hopefully match the retail release of W7.

And yes, I will upgrade because gaming and entertainment being a large percentage of my pc usage, there is no other choices.

Gee, did you actually read the originating question? TB asks, ". . . is it really worth it?"

My reply is directly towards that question. What's more, you really are kidding yourself if you think that a very large number of users did not pay for Vista. They did, either directly by purchasing it or an upgrade, or, by purchasing a computer with Vista installed.

My response is not an "I hate MS" comment and nor do I feel the need to start such a thread. I do not hate MS, nor do I like them. To be clear, I do not dislike Vista and I actually prefer it over XP. There are many good aspects to Vista. Nonetheless, as a Vista Ultimate user, I feel totally ripped-off!

Personally I think it is really worthwhile. I have been using various incarnations of Windows 7 since early this year and seen the stability and improvements of an excellent operating system come to fruition.

Honestly Windows 7 makes so many things easier. To mention a few changes which make everything so much better:

Jump lists - absolutely brilliant
Libraries
Media straming
Home groups
networking - especially wireless!!!!
Start button Search engine... I hate going onto a Vista machine now after using this. In a matter of seconds it finds documents and pictures on my computer from 10 years ago plus.

You do really have to try this one!!! On the surface it looks like Vista but underneath the hood is something else.

I've been running Windows 7 RC for months now on Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro 13", which is quite modestly specced compared to most PC notebooks, or especially my desktop PC, which runs Vista Ultimate. However, the laptop is so much snappier to use, lag is barely present under normal desktop usage like web browsing and schoolwork.

I've yet to try out features like HomeGroups since I'm not about to nuke my stable Vista PCs for time-limited pre-release software, so my MacBook is my only Win7 machine at the mo'. However, come October 22 I will most certainly upgrade all of my computers to the full RTM Windows 7, I'm so impressed!

However, my budget would only stretch to Home Premium, so I miss out on XP Mode. :( If only it was $39 like Snow Leopard! (and that, for any Mac user, is a Must have upgrade, just like W7).

It is only 50 dollars more, but i do wishthey put xp mode in all o fthem. Would have made everything so much better.

OFT. Its going to cost me 200 or so to upgrade my mac to snow leopard because you need leapoard to use the upgrade. I have tiger. Annoying.

OT. For all the calls that its vista with tweaks, it really is a great operating system. I installed it on my laptop which has no drivers for Win 7, and just from the install, every part of the laptop worked. Bluetooth, wireless, all from just the straight install. I have never had that with a windows install before. it was great.
