I need help to uninstall the last remains of Karmic Koala.
I have had to resort to doing a recovery to get XP going again but no matter how I go about it tha machine boots then displays the following message:
GRUB loading
error: no such partition
grub rescue>

The Grub bootloader seems to be invisible and have a life of its own!
Where is it and how do I get rid of it?

Assuming you have access to another pc (you did manage to post here).

Download the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows.
Burn it to a cd.
Boot into the cd.
Format the HDD.

If I do that, can I use the recovery disks.
Methinks I may not be able to.
I would rather use a non windows file manager to find the offending file and delete it.

My thinking was if you didn't need ubuntu, xp or any data from the HDD, just wipe it and start again.
If you need data, UBCD4Win has a bootable xp environment in which you can recover data (among other things).
If you really need xp to be bootable again, boot the xp install disc, select 'install windows', agree to the licence, then 'repair windows'. It will then make xp work again.

It's not a file that will show up on a filesystem. The first stage of the bootloader must sit in the first few hundred bytes of the hard disk, and is not directly accessible by any means that I know of.

You can fix the MBR by installing a new one, be it GRUB, LILO or a Windows one.

This page has some very useful info, or you can just skip to the bits that suit your need. I used the mbrfix.exe method to remove GRUB from a Vista install, but a Windows Install disk is probably preferable.

Let us know if that helps.

The lappy that I am talking about only has a pair of recovery discs. However I have an install disc that belongs to the desktop. Could I use that?
I did think of wiping the whole HDD and starting again but I dont think you can do that with only recovery discs.

Any full XP installation disc should be able to do a recovery install. I don't know if version (pro, home etc) matters.

i think it's bartPE that will fix this? the MBR no longer there or is nolonger recognizable to the installer at a guess. I'm pretty sure that will have a tool to fix it.

The disk(s) you speak of, are there lots of them, (read more then a floppy or a single CD with the manufacturor on it)?

if there are, there shouldn't be a recovery partition, and you'll be able to Zero fill the HDD or something that drastic, if you want.

If not, your windows installation will be on a hidden partition on the drive, and if you remove it, your recovery disks wont work.

That said, that s/n on the bottom of you laptop is for OEM windows, so as long as you get the right verison, (soo, if the sticker says Windows Home, you'll need to borrow a windows Home OEM disk), you should be OK

I guess the other option is replace the HDD with a new Bigger one. They aren't THAT expensive.

At the end of the day, the way i look @ it, my times worth X amount, i've just spent Y amount of time working on this, if X times Y = more then the cost of a new HDD, then i've wasted my time... but that's just me :)

ummm... sort of.

You can do a repair install of windows if you have either the same version, or the higher version of XP.

Soo, if you have Home, you can use the Pro disk to repair the install, thou technically this will be classed as an upgrade, and it will use the Pro CD-Key, not the Home one.

you can't use Home to repair a Pro installation.

This does not work in Vista/win 7

You break an install, there's no REAL repair path. Theoretically, the above is an upgrade, not a repair, and the only way to repair vista/win7 is in the op system.

The repair util in the vista/win7 disk is relatively good, 50-70% effective, but if it can't fix it and it still wont boot , sux to be you.

USUALLY if you are getting BSOD's, and you're positive that it's not a hardware problem, you can manually do a system restore, if Safe more, and load last good know config dont work.

you'll need another computer, perferably Win7 Pro, as you'll need to take ownership of a very hidden file. (very hidden in XP, i've only had to do the manual thing to a vista install once, and it's in a completely different spot)

BUT this has gone a little off topic... The problem is the Ubuntu install has broken, for lack of a better work, the MBR, and now windows, (i'm assuming that's what you're tryin to re-install), wont work?

ZOMG...

Aquired a "new" laptop @ work, it's awesome spec, for a freebie, but the "R" key has been smashed, and works as long as you're rough, and the "Down Arrow" Key's just broken.

you have no idea how bad it is, when you touch type, and have to go back to edit a post missing 1/2 of the R, and the you can't use a keypad to scroll down

RAH.

(still under warrenty thou... might see if i can scam a new Keyboard *grin*)
