... besides the obvious "taking photos of friends" stuff, that is.

For instance, I use the camera on my BlackBerry as a 'visual memo' tool. If I see a book at a bookshop which appeals, but there's a fair chance of it being at my local library (if it's not a latest release) or if I want to order it on amazon.com for delivery next time I'm in the US, I'll take a snap of the back label of the book that lists the ISBN (which can then be entered in the library system, amazon or searched online).

Also useful for price comparisons when shopping around. I saw a very nice shirt at Gap in Singapore a few months back but was knocked out by the price (they charge almost twice as much as in the US!), so I took a shot of the tag which listed Gap's item number etc, then popped that into Gap.com to confirm US pricing, and was then able to use that same pic when in the US to find and buy that shirt.

Ditto for price of perfumes: I've tried tapping out name and size and price on the BlackBerry as a memo, but it's much easier to snap the shelf sticker in Sydney Airport's duty free, then compare when you get overseas (sometimes in the destination airport's duty free as well as on the street) to make sure you get the best price. Even for clothes, something I see a really great shirt/tie combo on a display so I'll snap that with the camera for later reference.

Okay, those are not all the standard geeky ways to use a cameraphone of course, but my point is that the camera can be used in ways you may not have considered.

Anyone else care to share smart ways they use their cameraphone?

That is bloody clever!! I'd never thought of doing something like that with my cameraphone. My usage of it has only ever extended to snapping pics of friends.

I must admit, though, I -have- been known to swivel my MacBook Pro round in an annoying Mac-zealot kind of way during a meeting to take a photo of a whiteboard with the iSight ;-)

I use mine to take photos of funny things I see around the place.

Like one time I saw someone sitting under a pay phone with the handset to their ear.

Plus the usual; someone eating right below a no food/drink sign. Or the "We never close" sign right above "Sorry, we are closed."

It makes for a smile whenever I see it again.
