I recently bought a netgear wireless router for my home. and i was just thinking last night if it was possible to connect my 3 computers to it to form a small network. If it can be done, could you please tell me how? If you need more details, dont hesitate to ask^^ all computers are running xp home SP3
Thx in advance, Hayden P

Next step is to determine which of your 3 PC are wireless enabled. Late model Notebooks probably will be, desktops generally wont be. You will need a wireless device for each PC.

chances are the 'wireless router' has ethernet ports as well as wireless. if so he will not need a wireless device for each computer unless he wants them to be wireless. anyway. do you know what model router you have?

True! My advice usually is to avoid wireless unles you absoluty have no other option, but most who ask will ignore that same advice.
To really help the OP, some more information on what he has and what he is hoping to achieve, would help.

for the info of... you guys, 1 of the computers does not have a wireless card and is hooked up directly to the router via ethernet. the other 2 make use of a wireless card. the router is a Netgear WPN824v2. The wireless is all set up and each of the computers uses it to gain access to the internet.

Ok I just want to clarify what you want to acheive.
At the moment all PC's access the internet via the new router but what you want to do is share files between the PC's?
if you do have a look at this link
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windowsxpnetworking/ht/sharewinxpfiles.htm
One thing they don't mention is your firewall can stop file sharing from working. If it is you need to create an exception on your pcs software firewall to allow local IP address to access those PC's. Just remember your software firewall can stop virus spreading between your home PC's.
It might be easier and safer to buy a cheap 1 disk NAS which stays on all the time and centrally stores all your data that way there is no running around trying to turn on all the pcs to find or transfer a file

To make a small network of pcs, you wont need a server or domain. They are windows boxes, stick them all in the same work group, get yourself a netgear router with wireless let DHCP distributed the addressing to the pcs and you should be all set. If you do decide to use use wireless and not wired connections make sure you follow these simple steps....good luck!

I would recommend not broadcasting your SSID, if possible use a security mode such as WAP with a encryption of TKIP or AES

Does it make a difference if you use WAP or WPA? I thought as long as it is encrypted then it should be safe...?

Yes - WEP is older and can be cracked much more easily.
