Hi
Graphics cards come with a fixed amount of memory unfortunately you can't add any more memory to them.
You may of heard of a friend allocating more memory to their graphics card but they wouldn't of had a card in their machine. They would be using on board grahics which is a chip that sits on the motherboard and uses your system memory. They are significantly less powerful than a proper card like yours.
If you want a 1 gig graphics card the only way to do it is to upgrade the card which probably isn't an option given the age of you system as you probably have an agp slot and all the new graphics cards use PCI Express.
Hope this helps

you probably do have an AGP motherboard, but there are still some newish cards made with that interface. have a shop around and see if you can find an ati4750 or geforce9500 or similar built on AGP. They may cost a little more than thier pci-e counterparts, but they will extend the lifespan of your old HP machine.
