Hi I need help urgently and ASAP.

I have a HP d530 (convertible tower). The problem is that I have been trying to upgrade my old shabby WD 40GB HDD to a 160 GB seagate HDD both are IDE and bios reconises both drives ( I am very low on hard disk space). The 40 GB HDD works and boots fine but... I have installed a fresh copy of windows 7 build 7100 onto the 160GB HDD however whenever I try to boot from it without the 40 GB HDD my PC comes up with some HP media testing thing then it says media test failed check something cable(all my cables are attached to the HDD securely)then it exits that screen and comes up saying:
Non-System Disk or Disk error
Please replace disk and strike enter when ready. I disconnected the 160GB HDD and attached the 40GB HDD but when I pressed enter the same thing happened.
However when I attached both hard drives into the PC I can boot from the 40GB HDD but the 160 GB I can't. Also when I try to boot from the 40 GB with both HDDs installed it comes up with a blank screen and then boots like 30 mins just to reach the welcome screen this is ridiculous! the 160GB HDD works and boots fine on other PCs that I have
so any ideas???

I can only think of two things this may be, and I still might not have the answer.

1. have you checked the jumpers on the HDDs? Are they both set to cable select? there may be an issue if they were both set to master.

2. Have you checked the Bios? there may be some settings in there which allow another HDD to be used. Otherwise, you could also check HP's website for any bios updates.

hope it helps.

have you placed the 160GB HDD on the end connector on the cable (as opposed to the middle one)?
the bios may refuse to accept that the 160GB hdd is there if there is no drive on the end of the cable.
