Last week, I read an article on APC about Microsoft's "It's not cheating program". I'd not heard of it before. As a result, I now have a copy of Windows 7 Pro for only AUD$49.95 . . . which is remarkable value!

I installed W7Pro on my laptop - an HP dv8000, 17" monitor, CoreDuo T2300@1.66Gig , 2.5Gig RAM and nVidia GeForce Go7400. It installed quite fast (probably in less than an hour) and the update found a couple of missing drivers (such as for the 7400) without problem.

The installation and update was remarkably better than my experience on the same laptop when upgrading from XP Home to Vista HP. In fact, I had to wait until 18 months after the release of Vista before the Vista Upgrade Advisor advised that all the necessary drivers and application updates were available!

The biggest issues would be for anyone without a reasonably fast Internet connection. I have an 8Meg ADSL connection and it took about an hour to download W7Pro. Updates for Office 2007 were close to 500Meg and I am now downloading and installing XP-Mode (which has to be done separately) and that is another 500Meg.

So far, so good. I am impressed . . . but given the way MS ripped-me-off with Vista Ultimate, there is no way that I would have bought W7Pro at the current retail prices!

And thanks for an objective review giving Win7 a 9/10.

I got my 'evaluation' ultimate copy for free at work :)
(I hope the boss doesn't consider this a Christmas Bonus)

Clean installed in less then 30 minutes even with driver updates.

In your competition's magazine (PC User) it actually benchmarked better than a couple of Linux distros.

Looks like Linux world domination will just have to wait a little longer ;-)

I have Vista Ultimate on my desk, but at the current price of Windows 7 Ultimate, it will be some time before I bother to upgrade. Prices will need to come down quite a lot!

A couple? Given the asking price wouldn't it be reasonable to expect a massively superior benchmark in all instances?

Is LWD some kind of new new first person shooter, and will it's delayed release hurt pre-christmas sales?

I too have been using W7 (pro, 64bit) for about a week and so (touch wood) it has been fairly stable. I've had a few app crashes but I think these haveare to be anticipated where a new OS comes out and the old apps aren't really geared for it yet. Frankly, the features and look of the system are underwhelming, but the stability is very welcome. I particularly appreciate the end of the mindless disk-thrashing and the improved memory management.

For the record, I switched from Ubuntu. I'm happy to stay with w7 at this point, though I will at some point get ubuntu working on the machine as well - there are some nice applicationas and capabilities which w7 doesn't have. Some of the freebie games on ubuntu were also fun - and there's no need to live without.

Wow, thanks petert - I didn't know about the link either. Can anyone tell what the terms are for the Win7 Pro upgrade? Is XP enough, or do I need Vista?

Yay for alumni e-mail accounts :)

You can read the T&Cs on the site, but from memory it does not matter if you are using XP. I think that the version is actually a full version, meaning that it would not matter what OS, if any, was installed.
