At the moment I'm under an Optus iPhone plan and it's driving me insane.
- When 3g is turned on, I don't receive calls, just a happy message telling me I've missed a call. - When 3g is turned off, obviously I get slower data speeds. - The coverage is terrible. - On the optus website I put on a message alert when I was about to go over my cap.. I received no message and according to the optus call center, it isn't their fault.. So now I have to pay an extra $80 on my phone bill.
I never had any problems with optus when I was on my old pre paid nokia.. Now everything is going wrong.
What do you guys use, and do you like it?

Remember that Vodafone-3 coverage across Australia is less than that of Optus. I tried Voda for a while, but it was pointless with their poor coverage and worse customer service. When you read various fora, you also read a lot of complaints about network problems with Voda an Optus.
Telstra, without question, has the best coverage and the best network. Trouble is, it costs so much more than the other two. But, if actually receiving your calls is important . . . .

typical of Optus. the cruel part of me is glad to see someone else in australia copping the "its not my fault" from Optus. I remember their dial- up internet i tried years ago, and the nightmare that was. a laptop that flew above recommended specs(it also had winXP) and when i dialed out to optusnet, but never recieved any response, they told me that my (then) top of the line laptop was not good enough for their service. Since then- i have stayed well clear of Optus, and their deceptively good deals.(per $0.88/MINUTE calls on a $49 cap plan anyone? What about optus to everyone, followed by the optus to optus rorting monster cap?)
Tim01 wrote: I never had any problems with optus when I was on my old pre paid nokia.. Now everything is going wrong. believe it or not mate- mobile phones do indeed have a lifespan, and that gets increasingly shorter as the technology "improves"

I use Telstra- and am looking into moving across to their Business Mobile Plus plans, to take advantage of the $19-1GB data, per second call rates, untimed landline calls, and MRO/Outright purchase offer. I had to deal with 4 phones in 3 years(various brands) when i was with Vodafone. i wasn't getting reception, and i needed it for my job, so they sold me new phone after new phone.
On my $49 cap with Telstra atm, i am using maybe $70 out of my $250 calls. excess charges are my foxtel subscription and $29 data pack. To check your coverage with Next G, click this link: http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/coverage/maps.cfm note that if you live in an area that is light orange, a Blue Tick device is highly recommended to get the most out of the Next G network

Clearing the air.
Firstly, I am a Business to Business rep for Optus (just so thats out in the open)
We are aware of the problems Optus has had in the past with regards to its network, however we have recently spent over 2 billion dollars upgrading the network and building over 2000 new base stations in the last 2 years. we now can offer coverage to over 97% of the population.
As impartial as I can be, I do think Optus offers the best value plans available when coverage and costs are taken into account. Especially for businesses.
As an example, our $99 plan offers completely unlimted calls, video calls, sms, mms and voicemail to ALL numbers in Australia regardless of the provider. It also comes with 5GB of data (can be shared with a laptop/iPad etc, unmetered access to social networking sites such as facebok/myspace and twitter, $100 included international calls each month and free calls to 13/1300 numbers.
Of course it also includes a handset of your choice (32GB iPhone 4 included)
This is not intended to be an advertisement but hopefully i can offer some clarification on the multitude of options out there.
I am happy to help in any way I can so if you have any questions or would just like some advice, drop me a line. :)
Erik

I was actually wondering the same thing as I'm with vodafone right now but I'm going to switch to a better and more affordable provider hopefully. I've been wondering about Virgin mobile AU but I don't know anyone on that network. Have you guys tried VM before? Is the coverage/reception good? Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

I'm fairly sure Virgin use the Optus network for their services, so many of the complaints here about that network probably still hold. My experience with them has been that they're OK for voice calls, but "3G" data speeds are rather slow.

I personally think Telstra is the best in terms of coverage - but you genuinely do pay the price for the superior download speeds , a "REAL" 4G network and the coverage.
Despite reading a lot of negative feedback around the Internet , I've never had a problem with Vodafone either providing you aren't in the middle of nowhere! Download speeds aren't fantastic but it looks like their new 4G network (Rolling out soon) looks to change all that.
