Hey guys,
What's the best video converter, preferable one that can convert those formats that only VLC can read??

umm... ok, VLC is a media player, as so, will only plays what CODEC's you have installed, but is smart enough to play files that have been corrupted and just skip over the missing frames
but anyway...
Handbrake is powerfull, and fast for a free encoded, but requires some setup
i am a huge fan of a program called mediacoder. it's free, but comes in a number of different flavours, aimed specifically to media devices. i use the one for the iphone/ipod/ipad.
There is a version that will convert anything to anything, but setting it up gets complicated

You could also try FormatFactory.

I personally use the mpeg4 converter to do all the conversions and the format made by it is easily playable at all the devices and players as well.

Since this post is active again, my latest favourite is Freemake Video Converter. It's free, includes some advanced features like combining video files and cutting out sections. And includes CUDA support for some very fast conversions.
