I went and bought the new edition of APC this week because it had what looked like a good comparison of all the new tablets. Well blow me down with a feather if the review was not by someone that had not a clue.
How can you rate the iPad2 an 8/10 when you have to buy the 3GS version to be able to use the GPS, there is no USB port for plugging in thumb drives or direct to my cameras like I can on an Acer A500?
What the hell is the definition of heavy? Best the author does some weight training I think, perhaps he should have written "a little heaver" when he mentioned the weight of the A500. Seriously though most users will put a case of some sort on it and lift the weight "a little" anyway, does this mean that if the iPad2 user adds a 100 gram case it is now "heavy"?
Also why was there no listing of features side by side as it done with most comparisons?
How can you score a device when you have no idea of the cost?
Oh and just for APC in general, why the hell can I not buy a subscription for my Android device?
Thanks for listening.
Pete

Hi Pete
Understand where you're coming from, but you're adopting the spec vs spec school of reviewing. A tablet has more ports than another, therefore it must be better. That is a valid approach if the main way you judge a product is how feature-rich it is. We judge a product based on how good it is at its intended mission (and maybe we do need to spell this out better). Most people buy tablets to surf the web, send emails, and play music and movies. They don't buy tablets because they want to connect third party drives to them or get onto GPS. So things like weight are important, 100g of extra weight might not sound like much, but when you are holding a tablet up all day it makes itself felt. Content also makes a difference, and here, with iTunes and the App Store (which now has hundreds of magazines etc on it) the iPad 2 annihilates the Acer/Android combo. I thought afterwards we were harsh giving the iPad 2 an 8/10. Actually, we scored the iPad 2 and the Acer Iconia A500 Tab the same, acknowleding that the A500 is also a pretty good tablet - in our view, now that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been prevented from hitting the market - still the top Android tablet. Yes, agree about the comparison table, but we had limited space in the mag so we dropped it. When we publish the comparison online, you'll find a table with it.

Of course every device is judged on how feature rich it is, well at least if a feature is missing then that will make many rethink and buy something else, to just write those people off is pretty much what we would expect from Apple.
So you are saying that the almost 200 iPad GPS apps are not used? That is a pretty bizarre thing to say. Why do all the manufacturers include GPS then?

dude - if an Iphone GPS app, (or any app for that matter) for loads on the Ipad it's flagged as such. It doesn't mean it'll work correctly.
i have lots of apps on my ipad that aren't writen FOR the ipad, but still work... I can't remember an actual GPS modual fitted to the ipad, (edit - seems like GPS is part of the 3G modual that is missing from the WIFI only ver), but most GPS app will geo-locate depending on if it can connect to a mobile tower or not. (geo-locate is suplementry, and used only if it can't find, or it's taking too long to find the satelites
Obviously, this isn't very acurate, but it's how google maps works on the iphone 3G, (not the 3GS).
thou... why would you want to use an Ipad as a GPS anyway? Walking round the city, looking like a r-tard, with an ipad telling you were to do? or better yet, it's stuck to the center of your windscreen... :)
BTW, i think it's Navman, that has a GPS modual for the Ipod Touch, for about a $100. seriously thought of getting one, as it's a charger, holder, and has audio out to plug into you're stereo. awesome looking bit of kit.

oh, and i just read there are a couple of Apple approved Bluetooth GPS receivers available, but i got board, and didn't look up how easy they are to get in OZ and what apps they work with.
.... but i get the feeling that you're not going to buy an ipad, and yesterday bought a HP for $98?

I wouldn't buy an HP for $50.
No dude I would use my phone for GPS but that was not the point.
The article also quoted the price quite wrongly, it said $579 for the 3G model when in fact they are more like about $719, not so attractive at that price. So all in all the article that prompted me to buy the mag was a bit sad really and pretty much a scam.

I didn't, but that was not the point here. The point is that the article was just wrong, had misinformation and was written by someone that had an agenda other than being subjective. APC has become an Apple whore, we will tell you what you can have.......

That is a fairly unusual factor to say. Why do all the producers consist of GPS then?
