Q. Every so often when I boot my computer (Asus P5K-E) into Windows Vista, this unclosable window appears on my desktop (see this image). Is this an example of shoddy ASUS programming or what and how do I get rid of it?

Check in the Processes tab in Task Manager and look for something that looks like I Am Service or similar. If you identify the process, go to Start>Search Box and type in msconfig. Accept the UAC dialog and open the Startup tab. If the process is listed, untick its checkbox, click Apply then OK then restart. It should be gone.

While playing around, do yourself a favour and un-install anyother bloatware including the dodgey AI-Gear you have issues with currently. All the crap wont help your PC and only serves to slow it down.

Ah, ASUS software. To me their software is notoriously buggy and weird, so the above occurrence wouldn't surprise me.
Anyway, try disabling UAC first and foremost - a lot of ASUS's software proclaim themselves to be Vista compatible but in some cases... aren't, and UAC will affect system-level software that isn't ready to handle it. It is more likely that the software just isn't compatible with Vista (eg. My TV Tuner stick software gives me a white screen with an Internet Explorer 'Page could not be found') and simply uninstalling it for now would be best.

Your issue seems to be caused by some software included with the Asus motherboard.
To resolve your issue, I would first try and download the latest ACPI driver from www.asus.com and see if that fixes it. Otherwise, hold down your windows key, press R, then type msconfig and press OK. From the start up tab, find aaCenter.exe and untick it.

Am I the only one who thinks that looks like some kind of malware!?!?!
EDIT: I agree with LostBenji - remove all the Asus bundled garbage, if you need it then at least download the latest versions of what you need. If you uninstall everything and it's still there, take note of my original post below.
I noticed it says "I Am Service". I wonder if it's a service running in the Local User space with Desktop Interaction enabled. If it isn't malware, I reckoned it's a 'hidden' part of some software that wasn't removed during the development process and you've somehow discovered it :) possibly a bug or dodgy programming on Asus's part!
If it IS INDEED a service and not a simple .exe listed in the startup process, you will need to use the sc.exe tool to actually delete the service from the windows registry [or manually with Regedt32.exe]. Check out 'Services' in the Management Console to confirm this if you can't find it [Start > Run > 'services.msc'] and compare the list of services to a fresh or standard Windows machine; or get an experienced friend to check it out; dial in with RDP/VNC and fix it for you if you're scared... etc.
My $0.02.

This is a is a badly programed application in one of the ASUS applications that you installed from the CD I suggest that you download the latest drivers for your motherboard from the ASUS website and before installing the new drivers etc uninstall the ASUS programs you first installed.
A quick fix for this for you go to the "services" item under Administrative Tools (go to Control Panel click System and Maintenance and you will see Administrative Tools).
Look for the service running called "ASUS ACPI Cneter" yes it not spelled correctly right click on that item and select properties and disable it.
