what sort is it? It is more than likely the drivers aren't compatible with the new things in SP3

Okay - first thing's first. Plug it in. Then see if you can find it under Device Manager. Would be helpful to remove almost all other USB devices first, and plug it into, say, the back motherboard ports (I find these most reliable, others may find other ports more reliable).

See if it comes up under Universal Serial Bus as a USB Mass Storage Device. If it does, and you can't see a drive letter - then try going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management and click Disk Management. Hopefully you might see the drive with a partition in it - right click it and choose Change Drive Letters and Paths ... and assign it a drive letter and BINGO it works!

Now ... strange as it may seem, I had issues with some USB devices being detected as "Unknown Device" or as a USB Mass Storage Device with the Yellow exclamation sign complaining of a Code 10 or Code 31 ... something to do with device cannot start. Don't ask me why but sometimes Windows gets its pants all dirty and screws up like this - the only solution to this was to DELETE ALL OF THE USB CONTROLLERS - that is, delete the "Enhanced Host Controller" and then delete each of the other "Open Host Controllers" until the whole branch dissapears. Then reboot. Replug. And everything magically works (I had a new card reader need this treatment!)

Don't forget, if you're doing that, please use a PS/2 KB/MS 'cos your USB will be dead until you reboot.

Definately heed this warning LOL. Seen alot who tried and had issues afterwards.

The usual reason for the missing drive is there are a lot of USB - HDD interfaces that are just plain crap and dont play nice with built-in drivers or when the drivers are newer than the hardware can support. Nothing worse than having to load software to use simple things.
