I've been reading the virtualisation feature article in the latest APC issue. I have a Intel Q6600 running Windows Vista 64bit. Should I download the x86 or the AMD64 version of VirtualBox?
I've been reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64 and I see that both Intel and AMD have made their own versions of x86-64.
Can/should I use the AMD64 version?

Either should work.
Since you are running Vista 64bit, the only consideration is: what guest OS do you want to use in VirtualBox? If it's 64-bit, you'll need the AMD64 version of VirtualBox. Otherwise, the x86(32-bit) version will work fine.
I've only used VMWare, so I can't comment on how good VirtualBox is.

Always use a 64 bit binary on a 64 bit OS when possible. It'll have a slightly larger disk and memory footprint, but avoids the weirdness associated with running 32 bit apps on 64 bit OSes.
