You cant future proof as pc. The changes in the next 5 years are just unimaginable.
As for waiting for the next big hardware improvement - forget it!
As one hardware improvement becomes available, there will be 5 more that appear to be the next big thing.
At the moment, you can either accept that you need usb 3 or wait for pc motherboards to gain access to Thunderbolt.
Just build your pc - best parts you can afford and enjoy it!
The other thing to note is that in the next 5 years your current build pc will probably cost a fraction to buy the parts.
Performance increases while prices tend to decrease.

The one thing I cna say for Viewsonic is excellent customer service. They replaced the first 2 monitors without a problem and removed the faulty monitors.
But what is the point of havingexcellent custoemr servide if the product doesnt work?
Using a 20" benq - dropped from the 22" Viewsonic - dont mind the reduction in size - as the benq actually works!

I thought I would install the youtube song downloader on my newish windows 8 laptop. The install went fine, but when you first try to run the software, you are asked to fill in a form and the unlock code will be emailed. the problem is, the system can not send the email - no internet access. strange when i am able to post this topic. now i am waiting for a response to an email i sent using their website. anyone else having problems with this software?

I think you might have got it wrong! Most pcs are set up with a d drive for the os and the c drive is then set to contain all your documents.
So you could strat all the work on your pc again. Set the d drive up as a small partition and then use the c drive for all your documents. no more fighting microsoft!
