CES 2010: Google's own Android phone is a neat CES spoiler, but a no-go for Aussies so far.
In the past, Apple has tried to steal the thunder from CES with well-timed announcements. In 2010, that role has gone to Google and its Nexus One phone.
As befits the Internet age, virtually every detail of Google's first full step into hardware manufacturing had leaked prior to today's announcement in San Francisco of the phone, manufactured by HTC and sporting a 3.7 inch screen and Android 2.1.
Nonetheless, official confirmation of Google's plans means that the one product every CES attendee will be talking about won't actually be on show in Las Vegas.
With that said, it won't be on show down under either. Google is initially selling the phone in two packages: standalone for $US529, or for a remarkably cheaper $US130 when the bofficial websiteuyer also takes up a two-year T-Mobile contract. Future packages are promised for Verizon (in the US) and Vodafone (in Europe). The latter is the most likely to launch in Australia as a carrier deal.
However, even the unlocked $US529 phone isn't available to Aussies. Attempting to order one produces this message: "We are not currently able to ship to your country. If you wish to continue with your order you must specify a shipping address in Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom, or the United States."
For the record, Apple isn't being entirely quiet as 2010 starts either. Its long-rumoured tablet PC is expected to be announced on January 27. The one thing it's likely to have in common with the Nexus One? Limited availability outside the US.
You can see more about the Nexus One at Google's official website.
