UPDATE: We contacted Rockstar to confirm the launch date and the Dec 15 release date is on US time, so we'll see this pop up on Australian app stores come Friday. Grrr, one more day, teeth gnashing etc...
Commuting to work is set to become even more depraved on Thursday, with Rockstar bringing Grand Theft Auto III to mobile in celebration of the landmark title's 10-year anniversary.
We'd have been well and truly gobsmacked if you'd told us ten years ago that one day we'd be playing the original GTA III on our phones, but sure enough this week Rockstar Games is releasing Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition for select Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. It might have taken them ten years, but the genre-defining sandbox classic will indeed be hitting Android Market and the App Store this Thursday December 15 -- but only for users with the right hardware.
At launch GTA III is limited to a fairly narrow range of higher-end devices (some being clearly US-centric models not available locally), but Rockstar has also hinted
that it will update the list post-launch to accommodate other popular handsets (such as Samsung's Galaxy S II). Apple iOS devices:
iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation Android phones:
HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x Android tablets:
Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive
So... now we're just waiting on Half-Life 2 and Grim Fandango. Please.
