HOW TO: Get unsupported mobiles working with iSync

Apple's iSync utility supports the syncing of contacts and iCal data for a large number of mobile phones. But it doesn't list all of them and it often takes new ones a while to get official support from Apple. Help is at hand.

A German web site offers free plugins for phones that are not supported by iSync.
If you can't find one for your phone, it provides instructions for hacking iSync 2.0 so that it will work with virtually any mobile on the market. A list of successful syncs listed by manufacturer may tell you if it will work for yours before you get started.
You will find specific help and a step-by-step how-to for most of the Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola handsets and many others like BenQ and Siemens.
It's right up to date, incorporating the changes made in OS 10.4.6 which dropped support for the Sony Erricsson K700i amongst other things.
Essentially it works by offering a universal iSync plugin. You also need to download the matching script for the plugin from the site. If you can't find one, you will need to make your own by editing the XML text of an existing script.
It's not too hard. I can do it. And here's the end result... an "unsupported" Sony Ericsson W810i installed in iSync.
Of course, when syncing contacts and iCal data it it always wise to read Apple's syncing advice first.
