HOW TO: install iTunes 7 on Vista RC1

If you've had problems installing the new iTunes 7 on Windows Vista RC1 today, here's how to work around the problem.

If you've had problems installing the new iTunes 7 on Windows Vista RC1 today, here's how to work around the problem.

4-350.png

First, the error: "Some files that need to be updated are currently in use. The following applications are using files that need to be updated by this installer. Close these applciations and click Retry to continue. ipodservice (process id: 2516)"

Hit ctrl+alt+del and select "start task manager" from the system menu that appears. Click on the "name" column header to sort by name, and find ipodservice.

Note, however, that right clicking on the service and stopping it from that window won't work. (I got an access denied message.) Instead, click on the "services" button and authenticate yourself through the User Account Control alert that appears.

5-350.png

Once you're in the services pane of the Microsoft Management Console, find ipodservice, select it, then click the stop button in the toolbar (the black square).

7-350.png

iTunes should then be able to continue installing. NOTE: there is an important step at the end of this how-to which you need to complete in relation to this step.

8-350.png

9-350.png

And here it is... iTunes 7 running in Vista RC1.

10-350.png

Important last step: go back into the Microsoft Management Console, Services view, double-click on ipodservice and change it back to automatic start.

I don't know if this will help you, but I just installed Vista Ultimate from scratch and installed iTunes 7.0.2 on it without a problem, works like a charm.
Maybe you'd want to uninstall any previous versions of iTunes you have on your computer before trying to install iTunes 7?

Hope that helps

When ctrl+atl+del does not work to bring your Task Manager up, select an empty (blank) spot on your bottom tool bar with your pointer. Right click on your mouse and a menu will come up. Select the Task Manager and click. Now your Task Manager is open.

Just to pass on:

I have iTunes 7.0.2 working on my vista home Premium in the sense that all my music plays and I can browse my library.

But, I cannot download artwork and I have heard that sync issues arise when using your iPod.

I also understand there will be a new version to work better with Vista in the comming weeks.

Don't get disheartened yet.... ;-)

I have 2 windows hard drives.

One with xp, the other vista.

For applications that wont install easily on vista, I just swap over to the xp drive.

So I am just holding back on installing Itunes on vista until apple has made one for vista.

The fun part is that it doesn't work for me. I've tried everything that has been posted here, and still my iTunes refuses to post anything else than: iTunes have stopped working.

Needless to say that I'm using windows Vista.

The problem for me is that when I try to install itunes, an error message pops up and says that VBScript (Visual Basic Script) is not installed. What is VBScript, and how do I get it so I can install itunes 7 on windows vista home premium edition?

I have the same problem too! I don't know what VB script is either. I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my computer and I get that same error message. I would like to get iTunes to work just like you would.

If you are running Vista (32-bit)

1) Go to your command prompt and run it as an administrator.

Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt
right-click and select "Run as Administrator"

2) The command line should read

c:\Windows\System32>

3) Type the following

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

4) You should see a messagebox come up verifying that you have registered the vbscript.dll

"DllRegisterServer in vbscript.dll succeeded"

5) Click Ok

6) Now right-click on the iTunes installer icon on your desktop (or wherever you saved the downloaded file) and select "run as administrator".

The above instructions work perfectly except for one minor edit. Just in case you aren't familiar with DOS commands, you might get thrown off the trail when you hit the command prompt. The above instructions say that you'll end up at c:windows\sys32 when in fact, you may (or at least I did) end up at a different location on the hard drive (I believe it was c:\Users\Myname). If you find yourself there, just type this exact line once you've got the command prompt up:
cd c:\windows\system32

This will put you at the command prompt described above...from there, just follow those directions and you'll have no problems.

Yarrgh:

You must not have run the commnad prompt as an administrator. If you run it normally it goes to the directory. But if you right click and select run as administrator it goes to the right directory.

Astock, thanks for your tip and it got me to the right prompts but then I got an error message that the module was loaded but the call to DLLregister server failed with error code 0x80004005.

Any thoughts? I am trying to give my daughter an Ipod for her birthday and this GD new Vista computer is turning out to be a nightmare. Thanks.

Ok.. I did the whole "CD C:\Windows\System32" change when I launched CMD from my administrator account.. but I got that error about call to dllregister server failed.

BUT I found the SOLUTION.

It doesn't matter if your account is an administrator. you HAVE TO go to Start >> All Programs >> Accesories --> right click on "Command prompt" --> Click on "Run As Administator".

YOU HAVE TO!! NO if and or buts..

Hi, I followed instructions- thought I was nearly there and then confronted with box saying - The module "succeeded" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specific path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent DLL files. The specific module could not be found. Any ideas what I should do - afraid I have no idea !!!

I've successfully installed iTunes 7.2 on my Vista Home Premium machine in the sense that it will launch, I can browse around, etc. But when I try to play music the player does not work. I press play and nothing happens. RealPLayer and Windows Media player work fine - so it's not a sound config issue or speaker problem or anything like that. QuickTime will not play anything either...

I tried all the tips, but it still doesn't work. Every time when I get to the the writing system registry values, it pops up: Could not write value to key\software\classes\aif\Openwithlise\iTunes.exe. verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Can someone help???

I just installed Vista from scratch a few days ago. Only two problems: Pinnacle Studio 11 (It simply never installs fully, it freezes in the very last part and never works) and I-Tunes. As soon as I install it, Windows stops recognizing my DVD drives. Tried it three times already in different ways, even formatting C and re-installing Vista from scratch again. Any ideas?

I have the same problem with my DVD/CD drive. When iTunes is installed the drive doesn't work. As soon as I uninstall iTunes it reappears. This is unacceptable to me to have a new computer that can't run iTunes. Any fixes? Yes I have Vista.

ZarrimaN:

Had exactly the same problem and did a bit of surfing around and found this solution. I have vista home premium and latest iTunes v7 and after following these instructions I got my drive back - Hurrah!

This involves editing the registry so be very careful that you follow the instructions exactly.

Also I found that I had multiple entries for this key - I only updated the top one.

Here are the instructions cut and paste from the site where I found it (so I can't really claim to have solved it myself).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\
Control\
Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

1. Click on the start menu.
2. In the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
3. Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
5. Restart Windows

Hope this helps!

Okay, this is a pretty big problem I have here... But I'm really hoping someone can help. I got my computer last night. With Windows Home Premium... So I downloaded AIM and Itunes. THAT IS IT. And still, these are the only things I have on the computer. Besides what came on it. So, here is the problem. When I click Start -> Computer -> System Properties.... BAM it says the following
"Processor: Not Available
Memory (RAM): Not Available
System Type: 32 bit."

So... I know that they aren't "Not available" cause they were there before I installed Itunes, and you can't run a computer without those things...

Someone, please help. I bought this computer because it is VITAL to my work.

I am begging for any type of help here... None I my programs will open after this happens. =\ And I'm really at a loss of what else to do.

Thanks ZarrimaN - I tried your recommended fix and I have finally got my DVD drive back. I have A Sony Vaio with Vista Premium and iTunes. As soon as I loaded iTunes I lost my DVD/CD Drive. "Device cannot start error code 10"
Your fix solved the problem and works great. I get one error which prevents me from burining CDs from my playlists without reinstalling iTunes and then starting the whole sorry saga again! but i can live with that. Thanks very much for your suggestions. Old Nick.
