HP offers liquid cooling option on Z series workstations

HP offers Asetek liquid cooling solutions for single and dual CPU HP Z series workstations.

Back in April when HP first launched its new Z Series workstations, they were more attractive than the average workstations for business types. The HP Z Series could be had in a single CPU Z400 model and a dual CPU Z800 version.

HP is now offering liquid cooling as an option on both the Z400 and Z800 workstations. The goal of the new liquid cooling option is to not only keep the workstations cool no matter how hard they are used, but to keep the noise in the work environment down as well.

The provider of the liquid cooling systems is a company called Asetek, who also provides liquid cooling systems for computer enthusiasts and gamers. Asetek claims that research has shown that common office noises like computer noises can disrupt cognitive function and induce stress in workers. Exactly how expensive the liquid cooling option on the Z series workstations will be is unknown at this time.

“Liquid cooling enables a new world of enhanced user productivity enabled by whisper quiet computing. The ultra quiet Z400 and Z800 liquid cooled models are representative of an important new trend in performance computing - improving user productivity through low noise,” said Gary Baum, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Asetek. “Asetek liquid cooling is the enabling technology for achieving quiet computing and high system performance.”

My Asetek pump was always noisier than a CPU fan... Though that could have been due to:
a) it was dropped by my brother the day I got it.
b) it was mounted in an MDF box under the computer.

Add in the radiator fan, and it made a distinct noise. I'm back on air cooling after the pump died (it lasted about 4 years), and I miss the noise that told me my computer was definitely still on.

Edit: I'm not trying to bag Asetek, BTW. I'd buy their stuff again for sure.

Yeah, like a CIO is going to put this in Luddite heaven. Our Air Con is way louder than any PC could be. Might be good in an office, but "PC Noise" in an open plan environment is just irrelevant. Unless you count people bashing their heads on the desk while they wait for Vista to load.

Could be useful in a proper office though, and since it's workstations they are putting this in, not normal desktops, it's likely the CPU gets hammered from time to time, which causes quite a noise on many modern brand name systems.
