Finally, Naked DSL has gone on sale -- it's broadband which does away with the hated compulsory Telstra line rental fee forever.

Broadband ISP iiNet has published the pricing for its new "Naked DSL" service, which provides, for the first time in Australia, home broadband over your phone line without the painful Telstra monthly line rental fee.

The plans start at $49.95 for 2GB peak + 2GB off peak, but in a surprise move, iiNet has revealed that customers will also get free local and national phone calls through iiNet's VoIP service.

The all inclusive price, which has no additional monthly fees, is $20 cheaper than Optus Fusion, which, at $69 a month with 2GB usage and unlimited calls to landlines and Optus Mobiles, had been one of the most attractive broadband deals on the market for average consumers.

iiNet's $49.95 package doesn't include free calls to mobiles like Optus' package, but the $20 cost saving equates to about 65 minutes of mobile calls per month -- to any network -- at iiNet's 29c per minute VoIP rate.

iiNet is offering full ADSL2+ speed for all the plans, which is a change from its previous strategy, which required customers to take a VoIP or PSTN telephone service in order to 'unlock' the full speed of the ADSL2+ connection above 3Mbit/s.

The new plans all have a VoIP service built-in, and include the ability to port an existing home phone number to iiNet VoIP. If you don't have a phone line when you apply for the service, iiNet can issue you with a new VoIP phone number.

However, unlike all DSL services previously, because iiNet's Naked DSL does not require a phone service, you don't actually need to have a phone number to sign up -- you can simply submit your name and address and iiNet and Telstra identify the copper twisted pair running into your house and provision the DSL service over that.

iiNet's full pricing table: home plans

Plan name Price Total GB Peak GB Offpeak GB
Naked DSL Home 1 $49.95 4 2 2
Naked DSL Home 2 $59.95 9 3 6
Naked DSL Home 3 $69.95 30 10 20

Naked DSL Home 5 $89.95 90 30 60
Naked DSL Home 6 $119.95 130 65 65

Home plans come with:

  • Speed slowed to 64K after quota exceeded (no excess usage fees)
  • Unlimited local and national phonecalls (fair use policy applies)
  • Peak period 12 noon - 2am. Off peak 2am - 12 noon.

Brilliant, especially the free VoIP calls... after all, if you're trying to tempt people to ditch the landline, you may as well sweeten the deal by giving them free calls when Telstra charged them for landline plus calls! Can't wait for my ISP (Internode) to adopt naked DSL!

Sounds a bit like Ditching the Landline Lite.Do a real ditch. Rip that twisted pair out at the point of entry then Telstra really won't suck any money out of it.

It sounds good but I can see it happening that when they decide that they would like to charge new users for those voip calls or decrease usage and keep voip free for now.

As much as I enjoy the services that iinet provide, I always find they like to tempt people and then screw them over on even crappier service and plans...

here's hoping im wrong cause these will suit a lot of people

iinet user:

Just called iinet then and they passed on the following info:

Existing out of contract customers will have a 3 week disconnect of their existing service and a hit with a $150 sign up fee.

Even with the fee we'd probably make the switch if there wasn't the 3 week disconnect. Great pricing though and if we shifted house anytime soon i'd been signing up straight away. Step in the right direction!

Oh and all the info for existing customers is on the following page:

You left out the part where you can get Naked DSL. (IINET DSLAM'd exchanges or Even telstra exchanges)

Woo Hoo! This is such a great idea and I have been waiting for this for a while now. As someone who does not make a huge amount of calls, this is an absolute blessing. Doing away with monthly line rental will help the budget a lot :)

iinet are great!

Uploads are counted but that is fine for me as I do not share heaps of files. Even if you do get shaped, the up speed is shaped to a level where VOIP is still useable so it's all good.

Probably not the best plans for leechers but certainly an excellent product for people who don't make heaps of calls or share heaps of files.

Cancel my earlier positive opinion. They are counting uploads on the new plans... not interested ...ever

Probably worth mentioning that uploads are counted in the quota (which VOIP will eat away at too I presume). Not such a good deal now, is it. :-(

What happens to VOIP when the Internet gets shaped to 64K?
Does that not make VOIP inoperable?
If it does, then it is useless to me and I am not switching.
Does anyone know?
Thank you
Cheers

tin:

From what I gather, 64K should be enough for 2 VoIP calls simultaneously. Though I presume iiNet only allow you to make one at a time anyway.

Just remember to make sure QoS is giving preference to the VoIP data... Especially when shaped.

Amadeupname:

64K will barely do if you happen to be calling with the G.711 codec.

I've tries this on 64K before and its horrible.

G.729a will work but whatever you do don't go doing anything else on the web unless you have a good QoS solution.

Brilliant except on the new Naked Plans IINet now count UPLOADS towards your quota!

Could someone please explain the time periods to which iiNet's peak and offpeak refer? I have never had a straight answer to that question.

Peak time is from 12 noon to 2am, and off peak is from 2am to 12 noon.

Does this only apply to ADSL2, can you still get it if your exchange has not been upgraded?

vernon:

a quick thought you pay line rent so that if you have a fault to your first socket its repaired at no charge. now there are a few line faults that can cause internet problems to an adsl line if this happens who will repair it and at what charges.adsl is pretty robust but before committing to a plan i would ask this question.

Amadeupname:

I was looking forward to iinet's naked DSL. Well now that it is released I can see iinet have lost touch of the market. They are forcing people to buy their naked DSL with a hidden $20 surcharge for the packaged VoIP. People will see this as they will question why are they not simply getting charged $30 less. They should offer Naked DSL stand along with no bundled VoIP. Just like Exetel are doing here:
http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_adsl2_naked.php

I hope they see the market they have missed and make a product to fill the gap.

The other change I do not like is these plans add you downloads AND uploads together to reach the quota you are given.

nsanders:

Not a bad start but having off-peak restricts your usage; a 10+ 20 GB plan is $69.95 where as I currently pay $59.95 for 20GB ADSL 2+ with $14.95 line rental.
I don't use the landline apart from internet access so the pricing and off-peak restrictions is still not competitive enough for me to switch as 10GB is not nearly enough for a month - who uses the net from 2am - 12pm?!

What are upload speeds on these plans?

Also, does anyone know the answer to this VOIP question people keep asking - how bad is VOIP on 64K?

Skype VoIP needs 256K solid to be any good - anything less is painful.

James:

Moving to a new house and have just signed up for iinet naked ADSL.

A Telstra techie told me they don't give much support to phonelines using naked ADSL since they're not getting that monthly line rental.

He also offered me a very attractive deal on a Telstra bundle, not publicised anywhere as it would upset their partners.

The deal seems good but my gut instinct says avoid Telstra as too much focus on shareholder profit, not enough on the customer.

Time will tell.
