IN PICTURES: Inside Melbourne Digital Entertainment Festival

Yes, these people are real visitors to the Melbourne International Digital Entertainment Festival (iDEF2009) -- they are "costume gamers".

The F1 car is real and Panasonic is proud to show it off although no-one could tell us how this stand was related to digital entertainment

This is more like it! A four player F1 racing simulator game in a trailer which allows you to race your friends. Apparently the trailer is available for hire for parties and functions

Microsoft certainly wanted everyone to know about the XBox. This trailer contains 6 XBox consoles which you can play as well as room for staff and a breakout area. As you can see, this thing is HUGE.

A lot of behind the scenes computing power goes into a show such as this. We counted several PCs, 3 graphics displays and Mac and numerous audio/video feeds to make the presenters look good

This enormous speaker system (which is taller than a person) is designed for home use (if you have a 35 square metre room). The vendors claim that this contraption produces audiophile sound but we were too afraid to have them turn it on for us

If you have a smaller room, this 5.1 sound system may be more to your liking although it too looks intimidating

This is more suitable for smaller rooms if you are into funky speakers. The amplifiers are hybrid valve/solid state

Inside the Microsoft XBox trailer makes you feel like a rock star

The ultimate party game - a computerised dance contest for 4 people. Considerably more high tech than dancing to a CD or MP3 player

Is that Windows XP we see. Microsoft will have a lot of work to do to convince gamers to move to Windows 7

You are never to young for gaming. These consoles are specifically designed for toddlers

The dazed gamer look was very prevalent

Cos gamers (costume gamers) believe that dressing up in costume enhances the gaming experience. These people were visitors not hired to promote products. Or JB Hi-Fi for that matter.

In this Ubisoft snowboarding game you move the Wii panel as well as your body to control the action

This motion simulator makes you feel as if you are really driving the car - every bone jerking curve

Well I guess it's only fair that the very sad can have their very own convention. :>

As opposed to IT Gurus who get together and participate in 'extreme' fun, such as the protocols for backing up network drives ...... WOW ;)

Yeah I'd rate backup about as exciting, life challenging and rewarding as first person shooter time. :>

Meh ! To each, his own. And whatever rocks your boat.

It's atypical to see the usual comments posted so far have a level of tolerance and acceptance of what others have chosen to enjoy.

IT Gurus, you gotta love 'em ...... LOL

And High St Computer shop salesman who'll sell you an OS you do not need to run some over-priced graphic cards. Hmm? A little void in the ethics department there, even some parking cops offer 10 minutes grace. :>

And there was you taking the moral high ground. Oh the shame. :>

The absolute best are mostly housed at Silverwater.

And those who don't resort to PC retail? Right?

At a guess, too much Bundy rum?

Mmmm Just had another look at those pictures and if they gave me those two ( Fender?) guitars hanging on the wall I would very happily tell them where they could stick their X-Box :)

Looks pretty quiet from the photos. Did it get any busier than what's in the shots?

The photos were taken during the press only launch which was around 1 hour before the show started. This allowed me to set up shots (eg. remove the barricade around the F1 car, get inside the XBox van, snap the XP boot up screen) before the crowds arrived.

The show did become busy later but by that stage I had packed up the tripod and was heading back to the office.
